very poor performance from my my98 uk turbo??
Right i have finally got my subaru on the road after doing an engine transplant as the last one was knackered due to failing head gaskets and a few other probs( was like this when i bought it) my question is this, the car drive and handles well but the only bug bear is that it seems very sluggish, now i know that there not world baters but i have been in a few standard uk turbos and they felt quicker than mine, i have noticed that the boost will only go up to about 0.4-0.5 bar which am sure is well below standard boost also as i have been told it should be about 0.8-0.9 bar so am summising that this must be my problem with the car being slightly sluggish than normal, i have done a few searches and cant seem to find anything on turning up the boost (to standard that is) ther than the stupid manual boost controller what i dont want, can anyone help point me in the right direction as to what i need to do as its theonly downside to an otherwise fantastic car.

Could i suggest taking it to a subaru specialist. they will be able to give you a definitive answer to your problem. sound like limp mode to me. check for crack in boost hoses aor boost leaks somewhere in the system. various sensors may have failed as well which may have put the car into limp mode.

my pipes appear to be in the same place as the diagram bove, mind you i dont know whether i have the restrictor pill as it have not noticed one, would this causeme to have problems if its not there, i ould of thought without one i may have probs with the boost going over 1 bar as opposed to it being restriceted to 0.5 bar, if i get no joy on here then i will possibly take it to a subaru specialist but as a last resort considering how much them boys charge lol..

I think the Restrictor pill thing works - that if prefacelift - the bigger the hole = more boost and the reverse for facelift?? I think Joz posted a bit on restictors and boring them out etc..
Either way - defo need a pill in there somewhere.

Yeah, if you haven't got that pill in the vac hose between compressor nipple and T-piece, then you will LOWER boost in the 2-port BCS set-up of the facelift cars. (The 3-port BCS set-up of the early pre-facelift's works the opposite). But whether that'd be responsible for lowering boost to 0.4-0.5bar by itself, I don't know. As said, it could simply be in limp home mode for some reason - have you tried an ECU reset?
So defo check for the presence of pill first and go from there.
What I'd do is get hold of a suitable bit of OEM vac hose... That way you can slice the old hose lengthways to check for/remove the pill. If it's there, then you can just pop it in the new hose and refit it...
