Red face ***NEWBIE*** HELP WANTED

Hi everyone i'm a newbie and non mechanical person, i have today been offered a w reg impreza sport, but a previous owner has took the air filter completely away and as a result there are now 3 small what look like filter's attached to small pipes one to the left one to the right and one to the middle of the engine, where i'm guessing these would all feed into the standard filter now my Q is, is this the right thing to do and will it damage the engine??, also the clutch engages quite high is this normal? Also it has had a small fire where the fuel line came off to the filter and caught fire whcihas been replaced with new hose butwhen i touched the hoses petrol cam squirting out, how do i stop this from happening as i dont wanna blow up!! Finally you'll be glad to know is how much is a belt change roughly so i know if the garage is taking the p when i ring then for a quote,
are there any common faults to look at please its a w jan 2000 2.0 sport standard apart from the above air filter removal.
Please help as i need to give an answer tonight to the seller
Rgds

I would leave well alone............there must be plenty of straight ones out there. Belt change can vary garage to garage but expect £150-250.

if the clutch is high it might be on its way out. All in all, if it was me personally (and im no expert either!) id stay well clear and wait for a nice, low mileage, un-modified example otherwise you could find yourself with some hefty, unexpected bills!!

only reason i'm looking at it is a straight swap for my M reg st orange escort van, which is worth £700, owner is gonna get scooby mot'd on weds for me so full yr ticket, i dont mind spending £200 or so on it as there still going for £1200-£1300 so surely im gonna benefit?

It is impossible for us to comment on the safety/proper functioning of the engine intake mod on the basis of the description you've given.

As far as the cost-effectiveness of a potential swap is concerned, it's difficult to know whether you will benefit or not without knowing what sort of nick the Impreza is in. Based on what you've told us about the intake, it sounds eminently possible that it has been owned and modified by an idiot. Tough call...

Airbox is easy to plonk back on sports...should still only be one filter either via the resonator or direct to the manifold, unless it has breather filters ?
