I remember seeing a thread about this issue some time ago now.

Might be worthwhile trying to use the search facility to try to dredge it up....

We removed the threaded shaft from the shifter and hammered it in using a wooden block between the shifter and the hammer. It took quite a bit of work to get back in there. Then we just finger tightened the linkage bolt on there to see how it felt and to

belive thats what your after mate

If you can get a couple of nuts and thread them onto the shifter threads, leave the top one a couple of mm proud of the threads, so that the threads INSIDE the nut 2mm can still be seen. Now tighten the lower one against the top one to lock them in place. The nuts need to be M12 coarse.
You can now hammer the top without fear of damaging the threads. And YES, it takes a HELL of a force considering how easy it is to pop out

IIRC on classics there is a clip at the very underside of the ball & cup under the gaiter. take this off with pliers to release the cup from the gaiter.

this C clip keeps the cup & ball all in place - use plenty of grease in the cup when you do finally fit it.

I can't find an exploded view though to be sure - but its something like that anyway.

As above remove the C clip and the only thing fighting against you is the vacuum on the grease, Ive fitted a few and never needed a hammer to remove one.
