Yes when the mapped is tweaked, FMIC will be taken into account.

That age of car has a mapable ecu so will be ok. you only need a standalone ecu in pre 98 cars as they cant be mapped.

thanks for replies guys, was more worried about the maf sensor, couple people have said they are little fragile on version 5? hense standalone ecu so it can be removed, but this should be ok as long as i have map tweaked? (ecutek)

They have that reputation and are very prone to certain types of damage, but the current type "green stripe"-type sensor is far more reliable and long-lived than the earlier revisions, IME at least. To a large extent the "reputation" appears to be based on history rather than the current reality.

Provided you use a good, MAF friendly induction kit that is properly installed (i.e. adequately isolated from chassis and engine vibration), and have the map tweaked to account for changes in airflow to voltage scaling, then yes it should be more than okay.

However if you do start to push the limits, in terms of airflow or reliability, the other option you have in addition to an aftermarket ECU, is to use a non-standard sensor and, again, have the map tweaked to work with it. Newage Subaru/Nissan/etc can all be made to work. Your mapper's probably the best person to talk over the options with. If, in the long term, you're thinking about going to an S-D ECU, then sooner is probably better than later. If you're happy with the standard ECU, there's nothing here you can't do with it.
