Given the age of your car, if it is on the original shocks I would avoid going down the springs only route. If you can afford some uprated shocks great, but some Tein S (approx 35mm drop) with new standard shocks will work. By time you go for good springs and some uprated shocks you may well find that something like BC's are just as cheap. Coilovers are not a necessity, but given the price of some kits now it is worth considering.
Second-hand shocks are a nono in my opinion because you don't know the history. However that choice is yours. I threw some whiteline flatout springs (-50mm) and KYB AGX shocks which I imported cheap from the states when the exchange rate was good. Added to these some adjustable top-mounts and 6-months later I could have had a full set of BC coilovers for the same money.
Don't skimp on cheap springs such as G-Max. Had these on mine when I bought it and they had sagged so much it was bottoming out.

You can get a set of BC's from Apex for about £650, less when he does a group buy. That is coilovers complete and ready to go - http://www.apexperformance.co.uk/cat...7342d766daa118
Springs alone will set you back £150-200, plus the cost of the shocks. The uprated KYB ones are about £550, although I got them for £340 when I did my deal.
