Angry Does anyone know what this noise is? YouTube video...

Got this noise and it's getting worse and worse..

Louder in 4th and 5th gear - 60 MPH +.

Quite hard to hear on the video unless you know the sound and listen out for it...

It comes on when you put your foot on the accelerator, and goes away completely when you lift off...

Had timing belt, all tensioners and water pump changed..

Tried running without alternator + A/C compressor belts on - still the noise remains

Any ideas anyone please

Could be a boost or headers/uppipe leak. Maybe a dodgy joint or gasket...

Hello, thanks for the kind welcome... it only seems to do this in 4th and 5th gear - wouldn't a joint / gasket or turbo problem make the noise even in Neutral?

Its its speed related it will be a problem with you're gearbox, if its just 4th,5th. As its the only thing that changes engine is going the same work in 3rd.

Do you think it could be anything to do with the clutch because its juddered when engaging the clutch for years...

"Noises" are almost impossible to diagnose via this process. Unfortunately a video is a poor substitute for being able to hear the thing with your own ears. Aside from anything else without actually sitting in the car you can't judge whereabouts the "noise" seems to be coming from, whether it worsens with throttle application and so-on.

From what you have described so far it doesn't sound clutch-related, no. If it was, you would likely hear it in all five forward gears.

You've already been given as good a response as you are likely to get in this situation. Bottom line is that you will someone looking at/listening to the car to diagnose this any more accurately. All anyone can do here from this point forward is offer educated guesses that may or may not be accurate. That doesn't help you when what you want is an accurate pinpoint and a fix.

Thanks for your reply, I was just hoping someone might have had the same noise and recognise it straight away - its quite distinctive - but as you say, probably only if you hear it first hand not on a video!

The reason I mention the clutch is - I have changed virtually everything that moves on bearings (timing belt, tensioners, idler pullys, water pump, alternator a/c compressor). Also it sounds abit like a superbike when engaging the clutch?

Your thread's been up less than a day, and a bank holiday at that, so while it's yet possible for someone to immediately be able to ping it, the people most likely to be able to identify it are the sort who'd most need to be in the car to do so. Daresay it would be pretty obvious to a trained ear under those circumstances.

The only thing in the clutch area likely to cause extraneous noise is a knackered (or knackering) release bearing. Again this would cause noise in all gears, not specifically fourth and fifth.

It sounds at this point as though you've been on an increasingly costly process of elimination, replacing parts at random hoping each one will be the cause of this noise. From that video it could be gearbox damage, or, to give one tenuous but theoretically possible example, some sort of weird pressure pulsation or leak in the induction/turbo/exhaust related to higher engine loads (hence it only being observable in the higher gears).

You clearly need to know where it is in order to fix it. As things stand you could work your way right through the car and spend a stack of money unnecessarily without some sort of certainty at this point. First hand expert assistance is probably the most cost-effective way forward.
