I would say that you would need a re map for the maf to function properly and stop the car running lean. The maf sensors are sensitive on these cars and sure that an ind kit is only needed when runnin big BHP, 380 and above I think.

Im running a green filter in the std air box and 3 inch exahust system with 348BHP from my 04 sti
Unsure what is the best ind kit and which gives the best gains, best to speak to a mapper and tell them you plans and they will keep you right.

Or to put it another way, if you shell out for an induction kit and a remap, you will end up with the same amount of power (near as makes no difference) as what you'd get if you'd just shelled out for the remap and left the intake standard. As has already been said there's nothing to be gained in changing this area til you're well north of 350bhp. Good panel filter's more than enough.

Im running the K&N short Ram, I ran for near a year with no MAF issues before getting a remap.
The only issues it ever caused was surge, moving to a MD321T solved that problem though.
