A "smear of exhaust gob" isn't a particularly good idea. Aside from the risk of it squeezing out on the inside of the exhaust and subsequently making its way into the turbine, it'll be unlikely to make a good seal for too long given the temperatures in that area.
Steve - silly question but have you checked that the gasket isn't rusted onto the underside of the turbo exhaust housing, or possibly dropped out and lodged somewhere in the subframe/steering rack area?
If you can't find it then it could always be that a previous owner has omitted it. I certainly wouldn't put it back together without one.

I'm a Yorkshireman, a smear is just that....
And I had to 'cos mine was blowing, due to brain fade fitting the bigger turbo....
Soon solved with a die grinder !

thanx for your replies
it cant have had one on, i expected it to be stuck onto either the turbo which i took off or the up-pipe.
and i checked all down by the subframe etc - thats what i thought maybe its fell off.
i didnt know whether to use a smear of firegum - **** hot stuff but yeah i was worried about bits getting sucked into the turbo so i didnt bother.
well anyway seems ok ,got a few problems with the new downpipe as in its 2 inches longer than it should be and non of the brackets line up - doh but ive got a plan,
the up-pipe seems ok , well it doesnt sound like a tractor anyway.
