Default Best 3 Plug Ecu 1997-2001

hi guys, i am looking to upgrade my ecu.

i would like to change the td04 for something a little bigger, maybe the td05 and would like to know what ecu has the best map.

i know that the Z4 is best for the early classics but it has a 4 plug.

whats the best 3 plug.

thanks david

There is no OE Subaru 3 plug ecu thats suitable for use with a TD05 - All the models from that era had a TD04 (WRX + UK Turbo) or IH VF series (STi)

Best bet would be to get an aftermarket plug and play ecu (like an Apexi PFC or Simtek) and get it custom mapped to your engine.

As Richard has already said a custom mapped PowerFC/Simtek/etc is the only viable option for a 97-8MY car.

Your thread title's a bit of a misnomer btw - it seems to suggest that you think all the "three plug" ECUs are the same. In reality the 97-8 ECUs are completely different from (and incompatible with) the 99-00 ones. They may all have three plugs, but the plugs are a completely different size and shape, and there are major differences at the engine end.

my other option is to get the upgraded turbo unit from andy forrest -AFP4h, its only £400, i think its a really good buy.

has anybody run this unit before and what do you think of it.

thanks david

One of those, properly mapped, makes for an excellent and very enjoyable daily driver, especially in a (relatively light) classic. In addition for your £400 you get the peace of mind of an effectively new turbo sold with warranty - which is in contrast to the variety of (now very old) VF2x's you'd be looking at as alternatives in the same power area.

Don't forget though that whatever you get, the need for proper mapping, and where necessary, appropriate supporting mods, is paramount.
