is it possible to record ecu data on a pre facelift wagon in a similar way to the ecuexplorer that is available for the late classics? cheers all

You can't use ecuexplorer specifically, but there are other cables and software that do pretty much the same job:
EVOscan (software is free to download once you order a cable)
