Default running in oil question

After a lil advice from engine builders in terms of oils and running in. I build my engine and followed the book at every turn so far. Im due my 500 mile oil change, at the moment i have millers cro 10w 40 running in oil. should i put new in at 500 miles till 800 -1000 and them a good semi and finally fully.

wonder what oils next, and grade, make. and mileages. also only dribing to 3k revs, whens it save to move up the rev range

thanks matt

Dont have to be that ****.

I had my motor rebuilt by Zen. Presumably they used a mineral running in oil (don't know what it was). I ran the motor in over 1000m...

* First 500m, below 3.5k rpm

* Next 500m, below 5.5k rpm.

But after 500m, I would very occasionally give the motor near full revs - around 6-6.5k rpm - but never held it there. Apexi PFC deliberately set at 0.6bar... Then when run in, oil/filter change to Millers CFS 10W-40 / Zen tweaked the map, running at 1.3-1.1bar/7200rpm limit (STi HGs/v.3/4 pistons/v.9 rods/ACL bearings). Last oil/filter change (6000m) at API with Silkolene Pro S 10W-50.

No issues at all.

Don't have to be that "careful" () either Joz, in fact, IMO taking that long over "running in" doesn't do the engine any favours.

The concept of "running in" doesn't really apply on a modern, close tolerance engine. Driving around long enough to ensure that everything's running as it should, putting a fresh change of running-in oil in, giving it a thorough shoeing for a few hours (ideally on a track, and watching temps/pressures/etc like a hawk), and changing the oil again for a good full synth works a treat here. Theory espoused in much more detail here.

MJE, if I were in your shoes I'd give it full beans right now, assuming it's properly mapped etc.

Yes SP I agree with you. Glazed bores/blow-by and all that.

I just didn't want to take "any chances" at all .... I'd've kicked myself if something went awry, etc. Plus, at the time, unsurprisingly, I was "all out" on my CC lol
