How many Classics suffer from Noisy Tappets??
Hi all,
I have an early Legacy turbo which is renowned for suffering with noisy tappets.
Knowing the best way to combat this is to swap the heads for Impreza ones, I have aquired some early Classic heads, which I believe come with the hydraulic lifters.
So my question really is, are they just as likely to tap, or are Impreza heads not as prone to doing it for whatever reason as I dont really hear much about noisy Imprezas?
Or do I need v3/4+ to get the solid lifters and hopefully therefore no tapping?
Thanks in advance for any tips

My MY93 WRX is pretty quiet (hydraulic lifters) - v. quiet in the driver's seat (when it matters ). By comparison, my mate had a v.5 STI Type R (over bucket shims?) and his was a bit rattley by comparison. Of course, they may have been running too much of a gap and might have needed adjusting (if they can be?!), obviously.
You should be fine re. the noise if the Impreza heads are any good, etc...

thanks for the replies so far. It really bugs me in warm weather when i have the windows down and it sounds like a tank, winters great however, just up the stereo a bit and jobs a goodun. So these Impreza heads could be ok then

Before you shell out on getting different heads fitted, etc, have you thought about trial running a 15W-50 oil (as thick as you want to go for both cold and hot weights)...? Motul 300V Competition has this weight combo.
