To be perfectly fair here, that is a bit of an open ended question as it comes down to personal preference and the intended use.
Can you elaborate on your intended use ?

2.35 with GT35R is a good combination - I'm currently running this setup with cammed and flowed V5 heads - 2.0Bar at 4200rpm - 580hp/515ftlb, and somewhat overkill for road use

EJ22 is fine if you can find a decent block at the right money. We have plenty of experience with the 2.1, and the chaps we've built them for are surprised by the difference compared to the 2.0. With a 2.1, AVCS and an S206 turbo, you get the best of both worlds, flexible road driving and over 500 bhp, and all without crazy budgets.

that's pretty spectacular! I might have to start saving up for one for when the current standard wrx engine goes pop.
Not to totally derail the thread, but I've been toying with the idea of using a holset hx-35 or similar on a subaru engine, because they seem to make serious power on "other" engines (oh, and i've got one in my garage ), but my standard wrx bottom end would probably break at base boost.

The 2.1lt is a great engine, and much better than the 2.0lt, but the 2.35lt beats the 2.1lt in every area bar one, and that's cost.
The 2.35lt will make power and torque more easily, & at less boost, and that makes it more reliable at the higher power levels.
Mark.

E.g. for my purposes, I'd be happy to take a short block and fit heads + ancillaries and fit it myself, but building up an expensive short block (and likely getting something wrong) is over my head at the moment

The 2.35lt isn't a cheap engine, because the blocks are so rare, and everyone wanting to run big power is after them.
We have a special offer on the 2.1lt stroker kits at the moment http://lateralperformance.co.uk/prod...93e25bd20a58e7 and we can also maching, and prep' the block for those people wanting to do the build themselves.

Not picking on you or anything Mus but thought i would add some more info to this....
The Ej22T came on the earlier US legacys (90 to 95 could be a year out) and are centre thrust blocks with under piston squirters.
The Ej22 on the 22B is also a centre thrust but does not come with the under piston oil squirters.
Both of the above are closed deck blocks therefore ideal powerhouses...

I think we have probably carried out more of these conversions than most.
