best stroker for 500-600 horsepower?

as title i need to know what is the best setup for 500 ie 2.1 2.2 2.3 2.397 etc????

MartynJ 21 April 2010 09:29 PM

To be perfectly fair here, that is a bit of an open ended question as it comes down to personal preference and the intended use.
Can you elaborate on your intended use ?

F1 CJE UK 21 April 2010 09:41 PM

easy 2.35 as thats what i am having built. all down to what your looking for.

F1 CJE UK 21 April 2010 09:43 PM

yeah why? well over 500 at least and not laggy

F1 CJE UK 21 April 2010 09:53 PM

lol cool, rcm are building me a motor than will cope with 600 but the plan for me is to keep it fun for the road with 480-500. i wanted to keep the power useable. 600 would be scary.

stevie1982 21 April 2010 09:56 PM

Mate 480 in a classic is scary let alone 600

2.35 with GT35R is a good combination - I'm currently running this setup with cammed and flowed V5 heads - 2.0Bar at 4200rpm - 580hp/515ftlb, and somewhat overkill for road use :D

gus sti8 21 April 2010 10:09 PM

mine is a newage and id like to keep to std heads for avcs

EJ22 is fine if you can find a decent block at the right money. We have plenty of experience with the 2.1, and the chaps we've built them for are surprised by the difference compared to the 2.0. With a 2.1, AVCS and an S206 turbo, you get the best of both worlds, flexible road driving and over 500 bhp, and all without crazy budgets.

banny sti 22 April 2010 08:08 AM

At that sort of level I would go for a 2.35 or larger to get good spool and driveability.

Out of interest, how much power can your 2.1 take?

banny sti 22 April 2010 08:22 AM

iirc enginetuner has built one that is running 628bhp ;)

that's pretty spectacular! I might have to start saving up for one for when the current standard wrx engine goes pop.

Not to totally derail the thread, but I've been toying with the idea of using a holset hx-35 or similar on a subaru engine, because they seem to make serious power on "other" engines (oh, and i've got one in my garage :D), but my standard wrx bottom end would probably break at base boost.

Lateral Performance 22 April 2010 08:54 AM

The 2.1lt is a great engine, and much better than the 2.0lt, but the 2.35lt beats the 2.1lt in every area bar one, and that's cost.

The 2.35lt will make power and torque more easily, & at less boost, and that makes it more reliable at the higher power levels.

How much would a built short block 2.35 realistically cost, vs a built 2.1?

E.g. for my purposes, I'd be happy to take a short block and fit heads + ancillaries and fit it myself, but building up an expensive short block (and likely getting something wrong) is over my head at the moment :)

banny sti 22 April 2010 09:16 AM

EJ22T block = 1k mimimum
Internals + headstuds + honing + machining for 14mm studs = £3k mimimum

Henrik 22 April 2010 09:18 AM

ouch, at those prices i'll never get it past SWMBO... 2.1 it has to be (or 2.5, but then i'd be worried about liners).

banny sti 22 April 2010 09:27 AM

Pennine will soon be supplying linered block casings and engines, so 2.5 may still be an option for you.

Henrik,

The 2.35lt isn't a cheap engine, because the blocks are so rare, and everyone wanting to run big power is after them.

We have a special offer on the 2.1lt stroker kits at the moment http://lateralperformance.co.uk/prod...93e25bd20a58e7 and we can also maching, and prep' the block for those people wanting to do the build themselves.

Mark.

Henrik 22 April 2010 01:22 PM

Thanks for the info, Mark... if and when mine goes pop, it'll probably be replaced with a 2.1.

gus sti8 22 April 2010 08:22 PM

what is the ej22t out of bar the 22b?

Mus 22 April 2010 09:20 PM

Not picking on you or anything Mus but thought i would add some more info to this....

The Ej22T came on the earlier US legacys (90 to 95 could be a year out) and are centre thrust blocks with under piston squirters.

The Ej22 on the 22B is also a centre thrust but does not come with the under piston oil squirters.

Both of the above are closed deck blocks therefore ideal powerhouses...:thumb:

I think we have probably carried out more of these conversions than most.
