Exhaust blow/engine cut out?

Exhaust blow/engine cut out?
Hi people
My mums 95 Sti Wagon cut out on her this morning after a 20mile drive and she had a check on it just by a local mechanic nearby.
He said he reckons the exhaust is blowing near the turbo and its causing the exhaust gas to be too hot, making the engine cut out?
Does this sound like something that would happen if the exhaust is blowing? It cut out twice on the drive home.
Getting the RAC to ship it to the scoobyclinic (near me) tomorrow if they will!
