Default oil burning what to look at

hello all
new to all this ,I have a 1996 wrx import that I havent had long, its great to drive pulls like a train doesnt miss a beat starts always fine, doesnt use coolant. but seems to be getting through oil via burning, no blue smoke on start up but when warm and you are at a junction idling ,it will all of a sudden puff out a cloud of smoke. if you really floor it, it will emit some on gear changes. performance seems fine, plugs havent fouled

there are no funny noises rattles etc, doesnt feel lacking in power or get hot, just seems to have got through 1ltr in 400 miles ish
the cars done about 80,000 miles and apparently had a recon turbo afew months back and had belts done.

could the turbo be sucking oil, blocked breathers, valve stem oil seals, or just a tired engine , just seems weird that it hasnt run rough and the perfomance is fine. drive gently and not to bad just puffs a bit out when you pull up at a junction.

any advice is grateful as its not an exspensive purchase yet, but if its saveable without an engine rebuild, that would be nice.
I am using it everyday about 25miles a day for a few weeks and it hasnt missed a beat, use tesco 99 and just started putting mobil 1 15 50 synthetic to see if it slows the burning a little .

thanks
steve
