STI RA Longer 5th
Hi Guy's,
I just want to see if anyone with a V2 STI RA has had the 5th gear changed for a longer one, if so how does it drive and what sort of rpm are you acheiving at say 75mph in the longer 5th.
Oh and what 5th gear have you used and from what model.
Cheers
Matt

I used a 0.825 5th,
It gave 20mph per 1000rpm.
Beware, it ruins the box and creates a massive drop from 4th to 5th.
I run the box for 2 months but got rid as it gave a crap drive.
But TBH the RA box is pants full stop, too many gearchanges and little forward movement. You feel like your making good progress but every gearchange you loose it plus some.
Its only use IMHO is on a rally car as they have to have a restrictor fitted to the engine.........

Thanks for that, if it suffers a massive drop like you said then this has put me off slightly.
So with that in mind I've been doing some research with the different ratio's.
The first 2 gears I'd leave as standard from the RA box, then I'd take if possible 3rd & 4th from a TY752VB5CA or TY752VB5BA transmission and add the 0.825 gear from a WRX box.
From the below link it should work quite nicely but it depends on the 3rd & 4th gear's fitting in the RA box.
If your asking youself why dont I just put the TY752VB5CA box in the car instead, I wish I could but I can't as the rear diff is 4.444 and unless I want to start messing with the rear subframe and hubs it wont work properly.

3.454 2.062 1.448 1.088 0.825 with 4.111 diffs
I find these are a good compromise for road/trackdays, they give me a theoretical top speed of 150mph
A mate with a p1 never uses 5th on track so i'd say hes geared too long......
3.166 1.882 1.296 0.972 0.738 4.444 diffs

Not sure on the numbers but I have a 95 STi and the box is lovely. I am led to believe it is shorter than the WRX of the same year and longer than the RA. 80 is about 4k in 4th but will see 100 before the redline and 5th takes you to as far as you dare stress the engine into the higher revs.

id like a shorter box but would ave to be 99-00 box as im running 320bhp an hearthere not asstrong an cant afford the 6 speed but maybe an sti box of them years would be fine. with the vf23 turbo it lags for a bit so wud want a closer ratiod box to get closer to that boost kicking in
