Default very high fuel consumption

i have recently got my gorgeous uk turbo back from a complete engine rebuild and i am experiencing stupid high fuel consumption

the car has been rebuilt with forged internals and has a FMIC, TD05-20G, 3" super drager exhaust (which is too loud!) 440cc injectors (untill i get it mapped then 850cc)

what i cant understand is, before i had it rebuilt i could travel from suffolk to the midlands on half a tank of fuel. But now it seems to struggle to get from my house to my mums and back, without using quarter of a tank??? would mind but its not even 10miles away.

i have know leaks and i havent got a heavy right foot. any thoughts on what this high fuel consumption can be?

thanks TMP

the fact that you have modded it without remapping,it should be better once it has been remapped

Im suprised the builder has let you run it in without a map for the mods you have to make sure its safe at the bare minimum. It should be better once mapped but i wouldnt personal be giving it much (if any) boost at all until its mapped.

no boost as the actuator bar has been knock off.

dunx means that if ur using up so much fuel then ur running super rich and ur getting borewash big time which means you have fuel mixing with ur oil. very possible and not good. i cant belive the car was let out after all the mods without a remap.

what year is the car?

likely cause of high fuel consumption - lambda sensor faulty or not plugged in / fitted, intercooler pipe leak, dumpvalve leaking

I wouldn't continue running it in if it is using that much fuel as mentioned you could be bore washing it.. get it checked.

It's a 95 uk turbo. It had all of these mods before it had the rebuild, the only thing that will be changing is the injectors and that will be due done during my remap.

How do I check for leaks in the intercooler? As for the lambda sensor it was replaced about 6 months before it come off the road.

probably why the engine failed in the first place then.

you can't assume because you changed the lambda 6months ago that it is therefore okay.. then engine has been out, only takes a little knock as they contain ceramic.

you need to check all jubilee clips are tight, check the silcon for splits etc..

try it with no dump valve to see if the current one if leaking, block the pipes off.

Your ecu (if on STD ecu) is set for 380cc injectors. Running 440 will be making it v rich.

So it is mapped?
In the rebuild, were the injectors removed from fuel rail?

Sorry TMP was being pesimistic, but you don't want another re-build for the sake of a "proper" check do you.

Mine 22 mpg @ 70 mph, 14 on a "Play", and 6 mpg on track.

390-ish std.STI injectors @ 4 bar static.

no worries mate. it made me step back and have a think about looking back at my mileage today.

i did 50miles on £15 i know this as it was my 1st ever trip when i got it back.

i then filled it up full. i have now done in total 130miles (thats 80miles) of driving and the fuel gauge is reading just under 3/4 of a tank.

spoke to my local subaru dealership and they think thats normal. im just being paranoid.
lambda senser check out fine and there doesn't appear to be a leak in the intercooler pipes.

so i hope all is ok. still gonna wait for Tim to look over.

but not mapped for your car or your mods ..

All cars vary - what could be fine on one could be detting like a git on another.

As Simon said earlier I would get it done earlier than later even during the running in process to make sure fueling is right and not borewashing. This can be a running in map and the full map done later. The little extra this 'may' cost you might save a fortune if there was an issue.

I am sure any of the mobile mappers would offer a good rate for two bites at it for the sake of reliability - I know I would rather someones pride and joy was intact by doing that.

?????????????????????????????????????????????????? ?

If you modify a car by adding a front mount intercooler for instance and do not get it remapped then you are asking for trouble. Similarly, changing injectors or changing to a different turbo definately needs a remap.
Just because an ECU was mapped on an alternative vehicle does not mean it will be satisfactory on another vehicle because different cars have different modifications and the differences even down to just the fuel pressure can be enough to cause serious engine damage. Buying an ECU already mapped and then putting it on another car and thinking you will get away with it is very very risky.
Get your car mapped ASAP by someone that is familiar with both ESL and Subarus and listen to what they tell you. The cost of a remap is small in comparison to an engine out and rebuild.
