Hi folks. Really gutted about my engine just going kaput last night

I have a much loved 1998 Green 2000 Turbo AWD and it has been making noises from under the bonnet for a while now so it was on the cards.

I have done a quick search about my query on the forum but didn't turn up anything relevant unfortunately. I'm just wondering will a Forester S Turbo engine from a Jap Import fit my Impreza?

I would've though it could and I have the opportunity to purchase one locally for £175 and I've heard it running and it sounds fine. The Forester is Auto but as I'm only having the engine and not the box is there any other problems that may occurr?

A guy at a breakers yard who wants me to buy a really expensive Impreza engine from him says it can be done but he made it sound like it's a real headache.

The guy that would be putting it in for me is pretty handy with his Snap On and is excellent at working around problems but obviously if it's going to be a real nightmare and not as straightforward as just putting in an Impreza engine then I won't proceed.

I suppose what I mean is would the engine be compatible with my ecu etc or would there be loads of faffing about with having to find another ecu. I would like to think that it'd be a simple case of engine out of Forester into my Impreza and turn the key and it'll start but something tells me I may be just hoping for too much.
