Default Advice needed for 400bhp car

Hello,

I have a impreza sti type ra my95 with the following mods:

-Blitz SBC Spec R boost controller
-STi 6speed gearbox
-walbro
-FMIC
-VF24
-turbo timer
-boost gauge
-Braided brake hoses x 4
-GAB Adjustable coilovers
-Front & rear lower strut brace
-T304 stainless exhuast system inc. manifolds
-3" down pipe
-2.5" midpipe
-4.5" tail pipe - which is the only silencer
-vented and grooved discs

I'm waiting for:
TD05-20G
Apexi Power FC
800cc injectors

Now for the questions:
Do I need new headgaskets?
What boost is suited for OEM gaskets?
Do I need to get a Z32 or a Q45 maf?
Do I need a 3" pipe from the turbo to the maf sensor?

Hope to get some answers!

Regards,

Thomas from norway.

You need to replace all your engine internals, your on the right track with the 6 speed box, that will save you some time but the engine isnt strong enough for 400bhp (well it may last a little time before it ejects a piston through the block )
Bin the 20g, go for one of the MD series (321 etc) and a decent after market ecu or your going to just waste your engine

I have allready ordered the TD05
The car "should" have from the factory a closed deck block with forged pistons.

forged pistons are not enough to ensure your engine lasts for any length of time at 400bhp.

Forged Connecting Rods
Race Spec Bearings
Uprated oilpump

PFC + Commander, 2nd hand, isn't as cost-effective as it was 18+ months ago. Would be good move to pay extra and go for a new Simtek for its dual maps and MAFlessness lol. Plus all its other good features.

Ahhh, but JGM supplies, fits and maps them...... pretty much anywhere in the world (within reason). He's able to fly/ferry to you (if he wants to, that is lol )...

Well, he can't actually fly.............

That said though, many people do regard him as having super(mapping)powers (me included)

what do you mean by ignition?
fueling should be ok with the walbro upto 400 bhp?!
it has got a apexi airfilter and a fmic, so breathing should be ok?!
clutch is OEM 6speed, hope it will cope with the power
shafts?! hmm should be ok?
brakes are uppgraded
ECU, is going to be PFC
performance suspension is on the car

ok ignition amp might not be needed at 400. exhaust would be better 3" straight through. oem clutch will not last long with 400 genuine horsepower.

i snapped a rear half shaft at Jurby races in the Isle of Mann. the full drivetrain from a six speed will cut the risk of this happening. you didn't tell us your brakes where upgraded. ECU is not really great for dual map, launch control, full throttle gear change, anti lag. not sure if it will do maffless either. Again you didnt tell us if suspension had been changed.

just letting you know whats involved if you want a genuine 400 hp car. i have been there and the costs soon mount up if you want it done properly. if a target of 400hp is your goal is can be expensive in an older classic shape subaru. With new age subarus 400/400 is achieveable at a much lower cost as you have a much better car to start with. if you want more than 400/400, you then have to consider what you want the car for. cars with circa >500hp just become too fast for the road. you have to either drive like a granny or you have to completely rethink your driving technique. corners on roads you come into at 80mph in a 300hp car you are now coming into at 130. it is very easy to go fast, and i mean very very easy. cars with big hp will easily go off the clock and that is just unacceptqble on public roads.

you also have to consider running costs. Is this going to be a daily driver? whats the point of spending all the money on upgrades if you couldnt carry SUL to the car. highly tuned engines are not realy mean to be driven daily, just too much money in them and they have a limited lifespan.

Point taken

The apexi PFC will not be mafless no, as I wrote earlier. I'm wandering about the maf. Stock with 3" pipe?
Z32 maf?
Q45 maf?

Hi guys,

I am not a subrua owner but a audi TT owner. Although, some of you maybe already in stitches already, I have a monster of a TT that uses a MD555 turbo.

This car made 430 touque with 450 bhp top end. I must say, them guy at Turbo Dynamics was right. Great spool to.

Here is some video clips running the turbo.

YouTube - Audi mk1 2.0 Eurospec Big Turbo 100mph flat in 6th gear

YouTube - Audi mk1 2.0 Eurospec Big Turbo Launch 2

This unit is now up for sale with only covering 2k miles. The unit is in perfect working order and the reason for sale is that I am a power freak. I need to break the 500 mark.

I am looking for 600 pounds for the unit.

Prob no the best place to advertise however, I cant seem to access the market place to advertise there.

Please pm me to exchange phone numbers to discuss further.

thanks for the answer bigsinky.
the car will not be a daily driver, since the country I live in, NORWAY. Doesn't alow registration of the car!! It's the only country in the WHOLE world with those kinda rules, nice eh?! So the car will be used like 2 days a month for racing and having fun on track only

No probs.

so a track toy? excellent. get her stripped out and get the brakes and suspension sorted out. you will have alot more fun in a car that is well setup. believe me horsepower is no substitute for a car that handles and stops well. carrying more speed out of corners and braking later than others will make you faster round a track than an extra 100hp.

You have stated you have groved and vented discs. do you still have the two pot calipers or the sti subaru 4 pot calipers. the subaru 4 pot is a good caliper if mated to a a good pad (Ferodo DS2500). if you dont have 4 pots then you need to think about upgrading.

Power to weight helps a lot to. power windows, air con, sound proofing, seats, radios, speakers, alloys etc all weigh heavily. shedding excess weight can benefit you big time.

It all boils down on how much you want to spend on something which is essentially a big boys toy. add in towing cost, entry fee to events, race fuel and running repairs if you have an accident it soon mounts up. that's not to say this sport cant be done on a shoestring. i have been doing drag events and hill climbs for the last five years on a very limited budget, so it can be done.

My advice, enjoy the car, don't go chasing big power figures unless you are prepared to spend a lot of money. you dont need big horsepower to race a car (in fact sometimes it can be a disadvantage. I found it easier to get good drag times in a car with just over 400hp than with a car that had close to 650hp).

Hope this helps.

to be fair if it is a track care then maybe just having it sat at 350bhp -360bhp with all the weight saving good brakes and supension would be a better option any way somthign liek an 18g just a thought and it might make your engine now last longer
