As above, My bug needs either a replacement uppipe or header (fumes when cold coming up through the engine bay when the bonnet is open as well as the asociated noise.) what parts of the entire system can I replace before a remap is required and if the cel comes on, other than the actual light coming on, does it run in a failsafe/limp mode?
The question is very dependant on if you have a bug WRX or bug STi.
For the WRX the TD04 turbo isn't a big unit and you can remove and change things at will without a re-map. The ECU will simply compensate
The STi has a bigger VF35 and if you start to de-cat then the improved airflow can cause boost spike problems needing a re-map !!

You will get a CEL for decating it but you can change headers and uppipe (and most exhaust parts) without it overboosting too badly. I wouldnt go with tubular headers though - it will make the car very laggy. Changing the up-pipe may bring a CEL on if you fit an uppipe without the EGT sensor.
Why is it you dont want a remap ? It makes a massive difference to a wrx.

Would I be better sticking to a set of standard headers for now and just replacing the faulty part with a performance part rather than changing headers also? is there much of a gain from them?

Thanks for the advice so far guys, I have got a classic uppipe and new gasket waiting to go on and hopefully going from the end of the downpipe to the backbox 2.5" straight through. Mentioned above is the cel being triggered. I have got an obd2 lead and logging software, I can check for errors once it's on but is there any real reason not to do what i plan?

Ported headers help with torque, particularly if you go for a bigger turbo later
