Default TMIC on classics!!!

Lately, I have been weighing up the choice between TMIC and FMIC. Having previously had a front mount on my old wrx, been thinking of going down a different route this time.

It is obvious that the bigger gains come from front mount but I've seen a few top mounts around and am toying with the idea.

The STI8's have taken my fancy in particular. I have heard that they can be used in cars upto 350bhp which is plenty!!! Anyone have any useful info on fitment of these and other uprated items for newage to fit a classic.

Some pics as inspiration as well please

Thanks
Phil

There good for 400 bhp mate just the heat soak you have to watch but theres vents and that now to help eliminate that!

Is it?

Sticking the intercooler at the front theoretically makes it more efficient, but sticking it at the front significantly increases the volume of the inlet tract, which means that it takes longer for pressure from the turbocharger to reach the cylinders after each gearchange or increase in throttle position. So there's a compromise.

If a top mount intercooler does what you need it to as far as charge cooling is concerned, then going to a front mount will cost you some throttle response for no net gain. The smaller your turbo the bigger the cost.

As has been said they're still good nearer 400bhp.

Would be easier if you told us what sort (and age) of classic you have first.

Some pics as inspiration as well please
Sure, how's this?

It's more of a ball ache fitting the version 8 top mount to a 93 car due to the manifold and TB position and lack of space apposed to version 3 onwards which still needs work. If your keeping the original TD05 the version 5/6 tmic will fit better along with wind splitter and larger scoop from a later car and will be up to the job as I would assume you wouldn’t be pushing the car to the ragid edge considering the age.

I would be inclined as I am to run a FMIC on version 1/2 cars, assuming this is what you have.

Thanks, bear that in mind. Version 5/6 is another option and sounds like less hassle although thats not what's it all about.

Just was set on STI8 as the favourite although no pain no gain.

I take it that the position of t/b on version 3 onwards is different on those manifolds as opposed to earlier impreza's. Can it be that much in the same shell could be fun

Suppose could swap manifolds

Do you know if the STI8 has been fitted on earlier classic's???

The version 5/6 TMIC is wanting at 320 bhp.
I went from an STi 8 TMIC on a well sorted STi 3 Wagon at 392 bhp and gained 9 bhp with no mapping and a further 9 bhp with mapping so 18 bhp more on a Hybrid FMIC over what I could previously get out of the STi 8 TMIC.
ACTs went down from 43C. or thereabouts from memory to around 23C on a warmer day.
It was all well documented at the time and the 392 rolling road run was done specifically to benchmark what was available in comparison.
Not much doubt in my mind as to what is required.
