Mines got 80k on the clock and is noisey as hell sometimes, oil ghange will keep them quiet for a little while, there is no fix I know of, but surprisingly a day on the racetrack keeps them quite, and driving like a Granny gets them noisey, all to do with oil flow I suspect.

hehehehe - they all do that sir!

A trick as used and recommended by Subaru (UK) is:-

Add an detergent based engine cleaner to your engine oil and either let it tick over for 1/2 hr or drive it GENTLY! for a bit. (this is best). Wynn's do one - can't remember the name off the top of my head.

Drain the oil and cleaner fluid out.

Refill with fresh oil and a new filter. Subaru recommend 10w30 for this climate, but 5w30 for colder climes. 5w30 is thinner and fills the tappets better.

This does work, but is not a permanent solution, thats why the next generation of this engine as used in early Impreza's used a bigger hydraulic tappets for better oil retention, and later still went to solid tappets.

This advice was given by John Baker - Subaru Technical Dept. a few years ago. In fact they even sent me the stuff to do it with, and some special additive to go in the new oil to help prevent it happening again.

Maybe worth a call - you may get lucky as they all do it! tel 0121 522 2000
