Default Closed deck?

Im am about to buy a new engine for my sti and i was wondering if there is any way you can tell a closed deck block on a v2 classic sti without taking the heads off and also if the heads are sti ones? Any help greatly appreciated. Cheers

Cross-hatching around the oil filter housing is the ONLY surefire way of knowing it's a CDB (without looking inside obvioulsy )

I would be more concerned where your buying your engine from rather than wondering if its a cdb or odb

Really unless your pushing 500bhp I wouldn't worry too much about it, but why are you buying rather than rebuilding?

Cheers for info. The reason im replacing is that i have bought an sti ra with a 2.2 bottom end and blown head gaskets. The car has no supporting mods and i dont know the history of how the 2.2 was built so i am going to return the car to the way its meant to be

Yeah, as TB says, you don't have to concern yourself with the whole CDB thang until over 500bhp anyways....

if that's the case you should be putting a ej20 engine in and not an ej22.
