Default Next Mods?

Hi Guys,

Been saving for a while now and just wondering what to do next.....

Currently got
-Fully rebuilt forged engine by APi
-Fuel lab fuel pressure regulator
-3 Bar map sensor
-HKS Mushroom air filter
-HKS Dump valve
-Ported and polished headers
-Uprated alloy rad
-Trust Deact
-Trust Cat back
-Simtek ECU

Any sugestions on what to do next?
All suspension, gearbox and brakes are done except for whiteline anti roll bars so just want to focus on power now

Cheers

- Junk the HKS mushroom for a large K&N cone and 160mm ally inlet trumpet.
- Junk the HKS DV in favour of the OEM one (or a Forge metal OEM replacement).
- Walbro 255 fuel pump / new fuel filter
- Heat range "7" plugs

Are the headers OEM ported ones? Any uprated uppipe?

Which MY and variant/turbo/injectors? (you might need to go FMIC)

Yeah i thought that about the HKS Air Filter, was going to get an Apexi one??
Are forge the best dump valves to have then? Any difference??

Ok fuel pump will be on the list then

Headers are the orignal's but ported and same with the uppipe

Its a 96 WRX, standard turbo and APi variable injectors

That Apexi Power thing is good for 400bhp - a large K&N is prob good for more. Always best to fit largest possible filter in space available.

Forge are a good make yes. But it's more about returning to OEM setup - i.e. recirc. Therfore the all plastic OEM one, or better still, the Forge OEM-pattern all-metal replecement.

They're fine

1996 could be MY96 or MY97? - engine changed between these two MYs. Does your engine have the coilpack centered on the inlet manifold with normal HT leads, or individual coils-on-plugs?

Ok i'll have a look for K+N filter then
Whats the difference between the OEM set-up and my HKS one then??
So i wont need tubular headers then??
Mine has the individual coil packs on the side

Okay so you have a MY96 Ph.1 car.

You have a TD05H 16g turbo (assuming it's a saloon, yes?) that's good for upto 350 - but expect 320-330 after a remap and you won't be disappointed.

Thing is, your 380cc inj and TMIC won't get you there - ideally you need a FMIC, or at least a Bugeye or Bolbeye STi TMIC. Plus 550cc inj. - and preferably an FPR (Fuelab best) to control them properly.

Re the air filter - that Apexi 'Power Intake' one you have your eye on will be fine at this level (plus it comes with the resonator-delete pipe etc. - which is handy).

Your existing ported OEM headers/uppipe are perfect for the above-mentioned level of tune...

Ported headers and matched uppipe with the 16 G turbo will make the car crisper and more willing across the rev range. Quite noticable and you will get closer to the 350 bhp capability of the turbo.
380 injectors max out before 300 bhp usually.
440 yellow injectors without an FPR go to around 335 bhp and maybe 350 with an FPR.
To future proof fit 550cc, good for around 400 bhp or 500cc which are adequate for TD05 18G

You have the basics for a 340-350 bhp car on your existing turbo and Simtek ECU.
Why not take the car as far as you can on what you have?
As you have the Simtek you can fit an RCMS induction kit and junk the MAF Sensor body. As above, 440 cc injectors with an FPR will probably max out around the same power as the turbo. If you are going further in the future you may as well put the money into bigger injectors. 500 or 550cc injectors followed by a bigger turbo.

Ok so you recommend a RCMS induction kit, get rid of the maf altogether?
I've got APi variable injectors already
Would need a Hybrid Front mount though wouldnt i?
That and a remap

All that should see me 340 - 350??

That's it.

If those injectors can flow about 500+ cc, then, if you fit a FMIC such as harvey's Hybrid GTSpec2 (or the original GTSpec), you will have fitted everything that will allow the turbo to realise, after a remap, its max bhp potential (i.e. this side of 350bhp)...

If you go FMIC, you can also junk the DV altogether, without detriment to driveability as you're running a Mafless ECU and the TD series turbo can take the extra punishment of no DV absolutely fine!

If you have a forged rebuild and sound supporting mods e.g. transmission, then really you should be aiming higher then the 350bhp that your turbo (with the FMIC etc) can produce by upgrading to a bigger blower. If you can afford it a MD321H would be ideal, if not a TD05 20G would also be good! You'll be nearer 400bhp then.

I'm sure David will help you spend your money!

GT FMIC £270 or GT2 £290. We fit including sundries for £185 fixed price or we can send it out overnight £12.50. The kit already includes an additional joiner for the BOV connection. Proper remap with your variable injectors after junking the MAF sensor tube in favour of an RCMS induction filter and trumpet and you are in a position to max out your turbo and these are good for 340-350 bhp sometimes more, subject to supporting mods which you already have.
There is no performance difference between the GT and the GT2 but the GT2 has bigger end tanks to fill the aperture in front of the radiator.
When you phone RCMS, speak to Olly, tell him it is a 96 car and you want a trumpet and filter system and you have been speaking to me. We are doing this all the time.
