Default Blue smoke on start up...

Got my 'new' version 2 home sunday night and has been sat on my drive ever since, just been out to start it and i got a bit of blue (oil) smoke from the exhaust, soon cleared and was just then the normal condensation you get from big bore exhausts.

Piston rings? Leaky turbo seals?

Just dont know wheather i should be ring the 'friend' that sold me it to get my cash back or not.

I mentioned the turbo as you do get a slight whine when it kicks in that's all.

Cheers lads, i only paid 2k for it, but it isnt mint but i thought the engine was as i heard it from cold before.

like you sed m8 maybe pistons or turbo seals best to take of the exhaust and see if it pisses out with oil

Valve stems are usually the culprit for blue smoke on startup that clears. Could be the turbo too, What turbo is it? VF's can sound a bit whiney.

Doubt its the rings the smoke would be under load, on boost ect (I had that, thanks to an unbalanced rod knackering the crank!) Quick way to check for ring failure is to smell the oil in the sump (on the dipstick) if it smell of oil and petrol then things aint good.

Ok lads, thanks for that, i shut it off soon after and am going to try it again in a hour, then again tom so it's 24hours.

Think ill be getting my cash back!

just been out and i got some more smoke, sure it smells of petrol.

but i was under the impression black smoke was fuel and blue oil....

I think its valve stems but unsure on Scoob engines. That is the usual sign of them going, they allow oil to pass whilst the engine isn't running. Then on start up you get the blue smoke.

How much smoke we talking though? See it when your in the car? or are you watching while someone starts the car.

TD05's dont whine, so could be turbo seals, or something else fooked ect. As above exhaust off to confirm. Td05's are cheap as 2nd hand. (yours will be a TD05 16g i pressume)

When it had been sat since sunday eve, there was abit (I dont know a way of describing it, but a good cloud to notice it), i lent in and started it while my dad was at the rear of the car.

when i went out a min ago, again i lent in, with my mates vans head lights on the rear, and again a puff, although alot smaller, plus the petrol smell.

You will get the petrol smell from cold start, and would over power the smell of oil.

Oil smoke is more of a white blue (predominently blue tho) in colour. Only saying that as iv seen imprezas on cold start produce alot of smoke while idleing, it can appear to have a tinge of blue in it under torch light or headlights. Have you checked in the daylight?

yeah the first start up was in day light, nice and blue, bloody gutted really.

just hope it doesnt get nasty.

Gutted for ya, had all these troubles when i got mine in sept/oct. drove it for a couple of weeks then not again since!

Would try and get it to a specialist too if your gonna keep it.

Mine has had a puff of blue smoke on start up twice but 6 months apart. Very strange but my car is fine (well apart from my clutch just went)

Check the oil level ensure it is at maximum. Take the car for a gentle drive with someone following. Whilst travelling take your footoff the throttle for say 10 seconds, then open the throttle again. If your follower says you got a puff of blue smoke then it is most likely the valve stem oil seals, as under vaccuum oil is sucked in.

so if was the turbo it would be smoking all the time yeah? also should i take the boost hoses off and have a check, i know all turbo cars have a little oil in the hoses but how much is excessive?

and do the test with driving it gently with someone behind me to check if it's the valve seals?

i dont mind if it's the turbo as it whines anyway, but if it's the valve seals then he can have it back.

Tbh i'd get rid and start again, especially if you have that option.

This was the oil in mine after my engine failure. One ring and ringland lightly damaged. Blue smoke only on boost.

try a catch can on the breathers as they can sometimeschuck oil into the intercooler and cause a little smoke on start up
do a search on catchcans and you will see how to install one you can pick them up really cheap off the internet for a temp job but would need a 3 in and 1 out for a proper job and these are on a group buy at the mo

i had this on mine and was on the crank braether behind the intercooler

worth a check!!!!!

it has a breather on the right bank, the horrible ones that make the cars smell of oil, guna go check the other side now.

where's the one that goes to the interwarmer?

Not good.

I had oil dripping out the induction kit and blowing out the dumpvalve too.

Whilst the engine is running, take the oil filler cap off and if any smoke chugs out then something bad is wrong. Petrol smell in the sump too.

Is your friend still willing to take it back?

Hi buddy, thanks for all your pointers, it means alot.

Ok been out again, does NOT chug any smoke at all, when i remove it it doesnt affect the running of the engine either, the oil smells of oil, no fuel at all.

Wierd.

Im just thinking, maybe it's the seals on the 'cold' side of the turbo, as the oil seems to be all that side? Like i said, it does whine a little when it comes on boost. I suppose i need someone to follow me and give it some stick, to see if it smokes, then also like the other fella said a few post up, let off then plant it again to see if i get puffs or not.

No worries, its good to be of help.

Its good you dont get smoke, and no petrol smell in the sump. I would start with the turbo seen as it whines and is potentially a very cheap fix circa £100 if diy. Td05's are very robust and dont often fail (they can cope easily with dumpvalve deletes ect) My point being is dont be put off by second ones. Still worth doing a few checks for valve stems.

It's not especially likely to be from "the seals on the cold side of the turbo", unfortunately. It's possible, but doesn't fit with neatly your symptoms.

Another reason for all the oil being that side is because most of the breathers vent to the induction tract, and so, by definition, excess oil chucked out of the vent system will end up in your intercooler.

I suppose i need someone to follow me and give it some stick, to see if it smokes, then also like the other fella said a few post up, let off then plant it again to see if i get puffs or not.
As already alluded to in another thread of yours, Mossi was driving his car round for a few months under the mistaken assumption that it was "the cold side of his" turbo.

Advice to you would be as it was for him then. Getting someone to follow you round won't actually prove anything. If the follower sees oil smoke, you still won't know where it's coming from. Rather than doing all that first, get a compression test done sooner rather than later, as at least then you can rule out (or otherwise) the worst case scenario.

If compression in all four cylinders is good at least you can relax a bit and take your time zeroing in on the cause. Doing it the other way round will just make you a bigger bill if it eventually does turn out that it was a piston-related problem all along.

mine smokes on cold start up now and then. its done it 3 times in 18months. it seems to happen if i only run it for a couple minutes, shut it off and leave it overnight.

Hi all, bringing back an old post, my car's still sat there in bits, lol. Never have anytime to tinker!!

Looking at getting a ctach tank, i can see where all the breathers come out, but my concern is the inlet breather and what to block off and which pipe i need to extend to the catch tank.

As from what i can see the valve/breather from the inlet comes out then splits, one pipe goes to the sump/engine the other to the inlet before the turbo. Confused which one i should be blanking.
