Default My ECU isnt mappable

I have been told that the ECU in my 1997 turbo 2000 can't be mapped is this right?

If the answer is no, can I take an ECU out of a later one could I swap it over?

Not as easy as that I am afraid, you will need to purchase an aftermarket ecu or maybe find an ecu of a car of the same model year which had prodrive performance pack fitted for an extra 25 - 35 bhp.

Power Fc is the way to go for lightly modified cars cost versus gain, ESL may also have somthing for 97 cars at some point.

It is mappable, but the ECU needs physical modification to do so.

Power Engineering used to offer this service. (still listed on their website: Engine and tuning Products for your Subaru Impreza, Turbo, WRX, STi or P1 )

Its not "plug and play" like the later cars. Which is why most mappers push for a complete ECU change, as they don't have the experience in modifying the MY97 ECU.

I know its not cheap; So make sure you price up an aftermarket ECU (apexi, simtek etc)before going ahead.

Thats a bold statement to make, i think most mappers would know how to plug in a UNICHIP into a MY97/98 ECU! Hardly modifying the ECU

spent ages looking into this and none of the major tuners will touch the 97/98 ecu's.a second hand apexi set-up is about £400-£450 and £600 new so not bad.but is it worth spending loads more just to get another 30-40 bhp???
mine keeps up with sti's etc(cue the your talking out your *** comments)as got good suspension set-up and soon have mahoosive brakes! with 260.1 bhp...

Thanks for the replies guys,

at least I have some options now. I'm now thinking it would probably be easier to sell up and buy one that has a mappable ECU lol.

Time to do some thinking

why sell up?? Just buy a power fc off ebay and have it mapped to you car! Otherwise you will have to buy a newage scoob to get open source mapping.

i had the same problem with my 98 uk terzo , i added a apexi power fc ecu mapped by zen performance and the car made 285bhp and 290 torque from a td04 with a few mods exhaust ect .and has ran faultless for for over 40,000 miles . the car had 132,000miles when it was first mapped 177,000 now. original engine and gearbox still fitted.

well worth the extra cost imho over chipping an ecu

I take offence to that remark!
The end result is my main consideration.
Currently the best solutions are after market replacement ecus for 97/98.
Second hand apexi (installed one today), simtek, solaris/syvecs.
Imho. That is from a lot of r+d nothing to do with lack of knowledge.
If you feel the 10year or older technology you suggest is better then thats your opinion but I assume you have also got one and tried all the alternatives?
