Default engine check light

i took my car on a track day yesterday and after 3 to 4 laps the engine check light came on.

After leaving the car to stand for about an hour this light wold go off again.

Every time i went back on the track after a few laps the engine light came on again!

really unsure what could be the problem and would greatly appreciate it if any1 has any ideas what could be wrong!!!
thanks
also have tried driving it hard on the road but cant get the light to come on again???

Hmm could be loads of things tbh, my 00 impreza used to throw up the CEL on and off whenever i went on the motorway... Bloody thing!!
You need to know for definate what is causing the problem here, best thing to do is get the codes read off the ecu and go from there...

First thing though what year is your car? Is it modded at all, induction, exhaust etc etc?? If its a 99-00 model its easy you can find out the error code yourself in about two minutes, and that'll tell you which sensor is throwing up the CEL. Otherwise it'll be a trip to subaru, unless you know some1 with a code reader to hand..?

thanx, its a 53 plate sti
its only mods are a dump valve and cat back exhaust. both cats are still on the car. so pretty unmodified.
i have taken the car to scoobyworld garage and they have used a code reader and said it might be the lamda sensor on the exhaust but as the cel isnt on all the time they didnt hink that changing it would solve the problem.

Well on that basis it probably is the lambda sensor, cos when the CEL comes on it records the error code to the ecu, so if the garage have read the codes then they would probably be correct in diagnosing the lambda as the fault.

The only way to be sure is to get them to reset the ecu for you (if you haven't already) so there is no fault codes showing, then drive it till you next see the CEL come on and get them to check it again. If its the same fault, replace the lambda, otherwise.... err.... hopefully it won't get that far!!!!!

would it be worth buying a diagnosive device to read the code myself? then reset the ecu and when i go on the track again i can diagnose the problem myself??

also where and what to buy if this is a good idea?

and the garage didnt reset the ecu

thanx
