Heat Shield
#1
This has probably been done to death, but search is down....
I'm getting my ScoobySport downpipe fitted at the end of the month, and was wondering if extra protection was absolutely neccessary (with regards to a heat shields)? I obviously don't want to damage anything, but don't want to fork out a lot of cash either.
Any help appreciated. Cheers.
Tony.

Any chance of emailing me a quick diagram to show me what to do? I rarely get to see under the car, and I may give it a shot, if I decide to fit the d/p myself.
If not, thanks for the advice anyway.

I've be told that I can remove the heat shield, wrap the exhaust downpipe with exhaust wrap and it'll keep the heat in the exhaust improving something or other. With the heat sheild removed you'll get better cooling to the turbo as well and the chap that's done this has never had any probs

I put a HKS downpipe on my car the other week. The hardest part was getting the old one off. The heat shield was a complete pig, the rest was ok apart from access. I did it on a set of axel stands on my drive. Took about 4 hours in all. Without the heat shield I reckon I can get it down to about an hour for MOT's

Arghh! Not only do I need to buy the exhaust wrap, but I need stainless steel cable ties to hold the bl00dy thing on. Time to phone Jewsons, or B&Q!
Also, will removing the heat shield be a lengthy task for a garage to do? I don't want to have to pay crap loads of money to get this sorted.

Here's the reply from my friend about the exahust wrap. He got the wrap from Larkspeed in Leeds but it comes from LeMans motorsport. It's £20 or so for a 2" wide bandage 5m long which is enough to do a dowpipe. You can hold it in place with a big jubilee clip or just wire. It's nasty stuff though, so wear gloves.
It'll smell and smoke a little when you first fit it too, but this soon goes.

2 inches wide? I'll take it it's a stretchy bandage? I figure the downpipe is about a metre long, and about 5-6 inches wide?!? I stand to be corrected? Do you go over the downpipe again with the remaining bandage? Lastly (phew!), do you need to cover the big entrance to the downpipe with the bandage, or can this be left as is?
Cheers.
Edited to say: How WIDE is the actual downpipe? Does anyone know?!?!?

I'm also finding it difficult to find a big jubilee clip without knowing the approximate width of the downpipe. Does anyone know the size, and where I can get a decent sized clip to fit????

My DP is 3 inches diameter (oooer!) you wrap it up round and round working your way to the top. Like a spiral, like a helter skelter! Like those straps you used to get on the handle bars on the old racing bikes!
Also my DP is the same thickness from top to bottom so anyone else know about scoobysport DP's?

i havnt got a diagram of the bit to cut out, scoobysport told me where to cut mine, its obvious when you have it off and the new downpipe to look at, after you have cut it you dont need to remove the intercooler to remove the heatshield and downpipe come mot time

I didn't realise you had to remove the intercooler just to get at the heat shield (or am I misunderstanding you?). Sounds like an expensive labour job.
I may remove it altogether and fit the bandage.

Good, good. Okay so can anyone answer the following then:
1. The width and length of the ScoobySport downpipe?
2. How long it would take to have the heat shield removed professionally?
3. Where I can get a bl00dy clip wide enough to fit an SS DP?
4. Do I need to wrap the big entrance of the SS DP?
Can anyone help pleeeaasse?

Mickle - using wire seems to be the easiest option to hold the wrap in place. But can you find out if there is any particular kind of wire I need to use? Don't want it disintegrating on me.
I've also just spoken to someone at ScoobySport, and they say that their downpipe starts off at 2 1/2" at the centre section end, and gradually increases to 4 x 2 1/2" where it connects to the turbo end. I think I'll have to buy a larger bandage!!!

Might try phoning these, they sell the wrap so they should sell the clips.
Found this as well http://www.agriemach.co.uk/product_e...ting_wrap.html

Like I said though, unfortunately the ScoobySport downpipe gets gradually bigger towards the end, so I don't think clips will do the job for me. Unless I don't bandage the end that connects to the turbo?!?
Sod it - I'll give it a try anyway. Should have everything done and fitted by Tuesday (fingers crossed), so I'll let you know.
Thanks for all the input.

HI
Try DemonTweeks they sell the wrap and the clips, you will also want some silicon paint to seal the wrap so it will last a bit longer.
I got all the above from them when I removed the manifold heat shields on my car.
If you have there motorsprot catalogue there's loads of differant types and size of wrap and other things for insulating exhauts.
Not cheap though!! Probably better to modify your existing shield if you can.
