Default Impreza Key ?

I have a 1999 Impreza Wagon Non turbo.
I got a spare key cut as I had only one key. The new key is just a plain metal one, it unlocks and locks the doors and turns on the ignition on no problem. But the car will not start with the new key, the 'Check Engine' light starts to flash and does not stop flashing, the car turns over but will not start. Go bak to the original key and it is instantly perfect ! no problem at all. Is there a hidden security device in the key? if so can I get a spare cut or do I need to order one from Subaru ?

It probably doesn't have a chip to cut your immobiliser off therefore won't let you start the car what sort of alarm system do you have mate

The key you already have is a transponder type, and the new key isn't. You need a new transponder, matched to the car to start it.

Ps I got the car from a guy who did not even open the bonnet for 3 years. (very cheap as he needed cash in a hurry) Have just had a full service at 110,000 miles, last service was @75,000 miles rest missing.
I do not think the cam belt has been changed since 45,000 miles so I want to get it done, how much should I expect to pay ? Anything else I need to look out for ?, I love the car and it runs perfectly so I do not want to muck it up for want of a few quid, any fairly cheap improvements I can get ?

Or you can get the current key you have cloned from a locksmith, 50 quid compared to around 90 from subaru. I'm surprised the person who cut it didn't mention it, or put it in their reading machine.

I think a genuine Subaru key for a classic is around £75 +VAT
