Default Any reason not to test my oil temp gauge using hot water?

Going to be installing an oil temp gauge this weekend and I though after reading some of the install problems on here I thought that a good way to test it would be to wire the gauge in but use a cup of hit water to test the sender works before i install it. Then I know i've got the wiring right and the connection to the sender right before taking the engine apart - any reason why this would be a bad idea?

I'm also installing an oil pressure gauge but testing that outside the engine would be more of a pain than installing it (even though my scuba cylinders have enough gas in them to try!)

I use a direct reading oil temp. gauge and tested it before installation by putting it in a pot of boiling water. A good way of checking the accuracy - 100c!
