Default Radiator Temperature Variances

I have noticed that the top of the Rad and top pipe is hot whilst the bottom is vitually stone cold.
The car is a 2.0GL - Non Turbo.
Is this correct or is ther some sort of blockage in the cooling system.
The Rad is not blocked but could there be an airlock as the system has been drained I believe Turbo's get airlocks but I'm not sure about non turbos.
I have heard running the engine with the rad cap off can remove an airlock -is this advisable?
If there is a problem any advice or tips would be welcomed.

Sounds like an air lock to me - I'm not technically minded though.

thought the idea was for the radiator to cool the water before it enters the engine therefor the bottom pipe will be cool

The pipe doesn't have any heat in it at all which I suspect is not correct.
Any ideas on how to get rid of the Airlock or other ideas on what I need to look at?
Thanks.
