You would normally be able to buy a repair kit and bearings seperate to DIY. I've had a really good look around online and nobody is doing a repair kit or replacement bearings for one of these.
Your only options are bite the bullet with Turbo Technics who i am sure will do a fabulous job or just buy a different second hand turbo like a TD05 18G/20G or VF34/35 as a straight swap. The VF's i mentioned may not move quite as much air as the VF22 but will certainly spool up quickly enough. The TD05 18G is a nice compromise between the early spooling 16G and slightly laggy 20G and will move as much air as the VF22.
You have options that may be a bit cheaper than the TT option but then again when you get your VF22 back from TT it will be like brand new and you won't be able to get a quality brand new VF or TD turbo for that sort of money that isn't a chinese copy!!
You pays your money, you takes your choice!!
