Default Do octane boosters actually work ?

Hi, when we go to cornwall i seem to only find 95 ron fuel so i take it easy and put in a booster that so say raises it up a couple of points, to 97 , but the car still feels very flat, but when i get back and use super plus again the car goes back to normal performance again ,so does that mean the octain booster is a waste of money and not worth bothering with ?
cheers Rob.

NF Race Formula is what you want, yes it does work.

What model/year car do you have though?

Which magazine did a test on octane boosters a couple of years back and found no improvements in performance (checking bhp and fuel consumption). In fact one car performed worse IIRC. Regarded in the same category as snake oil.

Again what model/year you got? Unmodified Uk cars are ok on 95ron.

Enter a post code here Free UK fuel prices. 9,576 petrol stations covered - PetrolPrices.com and it will tell you were to get the different fuels and how much it will cost. Much better to put in the correct fuel in the first place

I think it depends on mods etc.

I use 100mls of NF in a tank of fuel and you notice some difference in high revs as it advances the ignition timing.

Also you need to take into account air temps etc for tests like that.

I get better fuel consumption on my MD321T,GT spec headers,Team Ice and map than I did on the VF35,oe headers and team ice system.

You should be adding it for protection, NOT to see an increase in performance. IMHO.

As for the car running better afterwards, so it should on the decent stuff.

Dunx is correct, the protection aspect is more important.

Just read up on a more recent report on which. The way the tests are carried out is very controlled and repeated 10 times to ensure the accuracy of the results. They even have a little video of how the tests are done. Their take on the boosters is on adding to 95ron as an alternative to buying the premium fuels in an attempt to save money. The general consensus is that some of the octane boosters do work to some degree but are not financially viable and you are better off buying the grade required by your vehicle.

I got confused in my earlier post and was actually quoting the results of the premium fuel test they did. The general findings on that one was that you will not gain an appreciable difference in power or fuel consumption for the extra outlay at the pump and that some cars designed to run 95ron actually ran worse on the super grades. Again the consensus was to run the car on the grade specified by the manufacterer.

But the fuel additives we’ve tested seem very unlikely to return noticeable improvements in power, economy or emissions. And, like the premium fuels that we tested previously, they’re generally not worth the extra money.
Modified and mapped cars are of course a totally different ball game and the which tests are not aimed at them.

+1

If you have to put 95Ron in, NF will see you safe should that fuel be poor or if your mods require a higher rating. I run it in mine even with 99 tbh as the Simtek has no knock control, so for piece of mind in the event of a bad batch of fuel I always top up enough to compensate.

I use CVL-Turbo at one bottle per tankful usually, should only be 1.33 RON better, but she pulls earlier and harder through the mid-range.

I did try two bottles in a tankful and even my "**** dyno" could feel it trying harder still. It may not make more power on a dyno, but it pulls harder earlier in the rev range.

All IMHO.

dunx

P.S. a full dose for 4 RON is three bottles per tank (60 litres), even I shy away from that every fill..... but do on track.

On a modded Jap WRX/STi you will notice a difference, on a standard UK spec car probably not as much as they are designed for lower octane petol. Also, as suggested by many on here, NF race formula is the one to go for. I used this in my highly modded Ra and taking it round Brands it felt fine, albeit accompanied with a hell of a lot more popping through the exhaust.

ive heard this stuff is good even in small quantities, so if you were to put just 50ml in per tank of fuel it'd only be an extra £2.50 per tank, not bad really.

p.s. dunx how much can you get cvl turbos for? noticed in the other thread you mentioned you can get them cheap
