Are the main dealers ripping off my sister?
Hi
My sister has a my99 Forester turbo and the other day it refused to start. I looked at it and thought it was fuel pump related as you couldn't hear it prime. Anyway called out the rac and he confirmed that there was no 12v supply to the pump. He hooked up a battery he had directly to the pump and the engine started. Eventually he admitted defeat and we recovered the vehicle to the local main dealers who have said it is the fuel pump and a wiring issue which they haven't got to the bottom of yet. When my sister suggested that the pump maybe was ok they said no as it had 12v going in and only 5v going out? Does this sound right or are they trying to pull the wool over her eyes.
Appreciate any comments (especially as fuel pump was £300+ and whatever labour hunting wiring fault(s) at main dealer rates
Cheers

Hi
Wouldnt say they are ripping her off. But dealer prices are extortionate! Youll pay full price on "genuine parts" and their hourly rates are very very high!
Your best bet is take it, as everyone always says on here, to a Subaru Specialist near you. You may find with the Dealers that one trip turns into 3 or 4 as they dont always sort things first time, same goes for normal garages

Thanks for the reply but i think you're missing the point slightly. I/she don't mind paying the price for a new pump "if" the old one is faulty. It's just that i don't understand the 12v in/5v out description from the dealer and the fact that the rac said there wasn't a live feed at all at the pump!

sounds like she got ripped off mate... i had the same problem at the start of the year with my turbo 2000... all it was was a burnt out relay fuse.. i paid 100 quid at a subaru specialist by me.. and that was from finding the fault and fixing it... when you say the car cut out on her did it start to go a few times before and then eventually it just died?

hia mate
will tell you whats wrong with it now , if it has a stigma alarm , the alarm cuts the power to the fuel pump , but there is a circuit board in main alarm box that goes faulty , connector comes loose causing no contact , which means the car wont start !!!
my impreza had that fault took me 3 days to find it last year , last week my mate next door scooby cut out while driving and wouldn't start , same problem ,
so check that kidda

defo sounds like a alarm / immobiliser cutting the feed to the pump. had the exact same fault on a golf gti which I got around by cutting the two wires on the immobiliser and joining them together.

take the steering cowel off , above that u will see a gold coloured box , 2 tamper torque bits hold it up there , take the lid of the case then , the plastic box is inside , unplug the module , 4 screws inside and check the circuit board , if you take a pic mite be able to see it
cheers rich

the pump won't run constantly your just joining the wires back together where the alarm fitter cut them albeit they might be a bit longer with the alarm wiring added on but thats basically all your doing.
i go with the alarm module as well
