smoke on start up from cold

smoke on start up from cold
im getting a puff of oily smelling smoke on start up from cold, im told it could well be turbo seals ? is this a simple fix, cheap and easy for a novice or a garage jobby.. only does it on start up from cold, and no its not condensation, its defo oil smoke, also i am using oil now ive had to top up regulary..
doesnt smoke when i boot it, just when its been sat for hours and i start up.

It might be the turbo, but there are stacks of other potential causes, not least valve stem seals, pistons/rings, plenty more besides. If you're able to maintain the thing yourself then it'd be worth doing some elementary checks. Check induction tract for the presence of oil, pull the breathers with the engine running, compression test etc. etc. If not, a local garage should be able to carry out basic diagnosis like that.
Working on the basis that it might be the turbo would be a mistake until you know for sure that it is.

Something I got told awhile ago,
Reset your clocks to 0 and top up the oil to full. Between empty and full on average is 1 Ltr, by the time your clocks tick back over onto 0 and you've covered 1000 miles if the oil is still ok then you normally don't have a major problem, however if your drinking 1ltr of oil in under 1000 miles then you may have a problem and I'd advice to get a compression test done to remove any chances of it being piston rings/seal etc etc.
We have two scoobies, one of them drinks oil but it's just an oil greedy turbo, no problems with the engine, pistons, rings or turbo...just likes to use a little bit of oil so requires topping up monthly.
I had a new engine under 25k ago and it's just ko'd 3 out of 4 pistons! You never know whats round the corner I suppose, so worthwhile getting it check at a garage to make sure it's only something small mate.
