Question Modded car...mapped for 95 octane?

Is it worth doing? What would I lose?
TBH, I'm heartily sick of paying 6-8p per litre more for 98 octane, it's 1c a litre more in France, that's about 0.9p per litre dearer.

I'm also sick of having to buy the dearest petrol about, Shell.

So.........can I have my car mapped to run on ordinary petrol?

It depends how much changing the map to 95 Ron would cost as well. Would take a while to claw back the difference from buying V-Power all the time

On a 2.5 you'd lose a little va-va-voom, but not enough to notice.....

It's not like you're some crazy boy-racer is it ?

If it helps...I got my Type R mapped by Andy F last June. Due to us not having anything higher than 97ron in Northern Ireland I opted for this and the car still made 325/300. Not the quickest type R about I know, but it still was a good safe noticeable improvement.

Get yourself some pure Methanol. In large enough quantities it's much cheaper than even 95RON (can be as cheap as 50ppl). Mix Methanol with 95RON in a 10% ratio mix and that should ensure your P&J runs very well despite 95RON.

Method: Take 5ltrs Methanol in a container to the petrol stn with you. Throw that in and then top up with a full tank of 95RON....job done!!

But where can you buy pure methanol? I thought it had to be purple and have piridine in it to avoid alcohol tax?

Methanol would be a real pain down into France and back.... unless you had two maps available ! Or plenty of five litre jerry cans....

HTH

Map for 95 ron isnt a problem - just have it in the car when mapped and your chosen mapper will set the car up to run on it. You may find that you can't run quite as much boost so torque will be down in the mid range and also it will require lower timing under load.

However, if it is just you wondering whether you can put 95 ron in yours for a long trip then go for it. Kept off proper boost it will be fine. I run mine on 95 ron for long motorway trips no problem.
