Faild MOT CO emissions?? HELP!!!
Hello hope someone can help please....Car went in for mot yesterday its a 1993 wrx but i recently put new engine in with sti heads, has a full decat and fmic and a chip in ecU....it faild on emmisions
Exhaust emissions carbon monoxide content at idle excessive 0.60 and should have been 0.30
Exhaust emissions carbon monoxide content after 2nd fast idle excessive 0.52 and should have been 0.30
I swaped the exhaust with one that had a cat and also changed the ecu to a sti ecu and put it in for retest today and still not any better. Any ideas what else i can do??? Thanks

The tester shouldn't be checking against those CO levels as your car won't be on the list of cars with emissions data. They should be checking your car to the NON-CAT test - up to 3.5% CO and less than 1200ppm of HC.
See the .pdf flow chart here
Your car doesn't need cats to pass the MoT.
My MY93 WRX has passed the MoT with no cat and no lambda sensor fitted - no idea what the CO readings would have been for that!!

If that's the case, then they are well under the 3.5% maximum!
It looks like your MoT tester has been incorrectly applying the post-1995 CAT limits to your car - ie; max 0.3% CO, it is clearly below the 3.5% required for a non-cat car and should have passed.

go back to where it was tested and find out what test was done on it. iif it did have a cat test done on it ask the tester to show you in the testers manual where it says that needs a cat test.
unless they have some special database that covers imports he won't beable to show you and will have to retest it.
if they start being arsey about it tell them you will ring vosa about it

Hang on, I wouldn't get arsey straight away.
Did you make it clear the car was an import? If not then how was the MOT tester to know, he'd have just applied the relevant years emissions levels to it.
Phone up and explain, and see if they'll take it back, free of charge, for a non-CAT test.
By the way, historically cars from 1993 as far back as 1973, (I think), have the 3.5% / 1200ppm limit, my 85 mini is included in this.
Pre-73 is a visible smoke test only, and includes my 64 Wolseley Hornet.
I don't think you'll convince anyone the Impreza is pre-73 though...

if he didnt know it was an import from the chassis number then something is a miss
no one was saying go back and kick off straight away but if they have made a mistake and won't sort it out then its time to start shouting

It now has an MOT!! After reading ur posts i contacted vosa and asked them before i went back to garage, they confirmed it was a NO CAT TEST which was fine so i then contacted the garage and he argued the point....he asked for proof it was an import which i did.
But he was still trying to say i was wrong and it was to be tested as a turbo 2000 as that wat his book said....
After a little arguing and me contactn vosa on loud speaker he finally agreed i was right! So thanks again for helping me out on this post or i would still be trying to get it threw

Glad it was a good result!
If you'd shown the tester your V5, it would have clearly stated that it was a Personal Import. He couldn't test a WRX as a Turbo 2000 because the VIN numbers are different.
