hi guys, i am going to get another impreza and need some advice.
i have had 2 scoobys before, an imort wrx and an import sti both with TD05 turbo units.

i am thinking of buying a 2001-2002 bugeye but havnt had any experience of driving a car with the TD04 turbo unit, i have been told that the TD04 kicks in a lot quicker than the TD05 turbo.

my question is this....

i was wondering if anybody has a chane of driving both and what they felt about the fact that the turbo kicks in much sooner.

i should add that i did like have the turbo kick in later and more violant.

You'll probably be dissapointed. TD04 is the smallest turbo and pretty gutless.

 

i see that Andy f sells a hybrid TD04 unit that can take up to around 300bhp.

has anybody driven a car with this unit or a high bhp TD04 impreza.

I wouldn't necessarily agree with Bob that the TD04 is "gutless" - but that doesn't mean he's wrong either. Largely down to what you're comparing with. The power level your two previous Imprezas were running, and whether the one you're buying is bog standard or not will all influence whether a bugeye WRX would "feel slow" to you or not.

If your previous cars were standard-ish 260/280bhp, then a well sorted TD04-equipped classic would compare very favourably, because, as you say, the smaller turbo spools earlier and would deliver superior throttle response to a car running the same power via a larger one. Andy's hybrid TD04 is an excellent turbo and makes a better option than an old VF28/29/etc nowadays, but whether this would be enough to make a newage feel as quick as a well sorted TD05-equipped classic is good question.

The problem you have to be aware of with any newage is that spec for spec they're a good 150kg or so heavier (more when you figure in the weight of the 6 speed box on the STis). This makes them slower, and added to the improved cabin insulation they feel less responsive than a classic running the same power level.

So, if you came out of a classic with a tuned engine, then Bob's probably right, a standard WRX won't feel that quick in comparison, but ultimately the only way to decide whether it's quick enough for you is to try one.

my first impreza was a wrx and i had that 4 years ago, it was running 253bhp at the fly wheel.

my second impreza was an STi and was running 278bhp at the fly wheel untill i changed the equal length header for stock ones and then i am thinking it was hitting around 260bhp, i sold that last year.

the main reason we are thinking of getting a bug-eye over a classic is that my wife hates the interior of the classics and wants a newer feel.

i am still very stuck on this one, i am happy to throw a bit of cash at a bug-eye to get the bhp up to the same.

it is ultimatly the diffence in drivability that i am concerned about, like i said before i did like having a little lag and then lots of boost.

The TD04 in the Bug WRX gives barely any lag but at a loss of top end - 212BHP std. With the addition af a de-cat/sports cat and Air filter plus remap you should be looking at around the 270BHP mark with 1.25 Bar boost (max) coming in by 3250rpm 1 Bar at around 3000rpm.
Swap the TD04 for a VF34 and you're looking at around 330BHP (assuming you do the injectors, fuel pump and intercooler as well) go to a TD05-18G and you should be in the 350/60s which is about as far as it's reccomended to go on a std Bug wrx gearbox and internals. I know loads will say 'I've got more and it hasn't broken', they always forget to mention the yet! Of course you may be fine with more!

Buy a classic and put the interior out of a newer car in

 

Buy a bugeye STi and it's the bargain of the decade......almost unbreakable unless you mod it to silly levels

 

would the dash from a new age fit in a classic.
