Question Oil grade?

Hi,

I am shortly going to change the oil on my Scoob and was wondering which grade to buy.
Its always had 15w/50- motul 300v or silkolene.

Why does everyone recommend this grade for Scoobs? Is there something particular about Scoobs that require a heavy oil such as 15/50?

I was thinking of getting a 5w/40 or something similar for better cold weather protection. Is this a good idea or am I missing something?

Thanks

Not everyone recommends heavy oils like this, mainly it's the track day users or people running highly modded motors. You are correct in questioning this and realising that the thinner oils give better protection for cold starts, also less drag and effectively more power, ironically.

Even worse the thick oils tend to over pressurise when the engine and oil is cold, opening the pressure relief valve and dumping the oil pressure AND flow back to the sump, providing even less protection for the engine.

Just go and put my flamesuit on LOL

The OP drives a 00MY car, not a WRC car. 10/40 fully synthetic as recommended by the handbook. (Fully synthetic for ultimate protection)

Yep, 5w-40 or 10w-40 synthetic unless heavily modded or used on track alot.

Ester based are the best and offer the most protection and performance, have a browse Opie Oils - Ester Synthetic

Cheers

Hi, I use the 10/ 50 fully syn pro s in my 03 sti, because in the factory handbook page 11- 19 it states to switch to this grade (and others) under severe driving ,high temps and heavy-duty applications ! , and the way i sometimes use my car , thats a good enough reason, as i'd rather have it and not need it than the other way round.
