Version 3 STI engines - best of the lot?
Hi All,
I've read a couple of times on here and other forums too that the version 3 STI engine was/is the best of the lot - well for classics at least. Is this true? And if so - whats the reason??
Cheers,
Imran

The 3 had the most agressive cams out of the lot and had redesigned pistons (as the original and version 2 STI pistons were not the best), but was it the best engine? well they were all flawed in their own way, it wasnt until the twin scroll cars came out that they rectified pretty much all the issues the earlier cars suffered from.
Tony
PS, it was still a 280ps engine, no mainstream STI had 300ps out of the factory, the only classic that did was the S201, and that was damned ugly lol

5/6 heads are better.. . the 3 has been said to have better cams but then most of the people pushing the envolope for years had 98 or older car which therefore meant they couldn't easily run v5 heads...
the best heads would be sti with AVCS.. quad AVCS at that ie. hatchback.

Taken from you and your Subaru Impreza :-
The Sti now progressed to a version III. Most development engineers will tell you that their favourite car is 'the next one' - and indeed Takeshi Ito says just this. However, candidly he also explained to the author : 'if you allow me to give you the most impressive impreza, it is the Sti version III. We were able to show a significant improvement for performance with this model'.
Now dont go ripping that article apart, for one It is just a quote and two I have an STI vIII lol .

Officially the Sti vIII powerplant developed the same output as the 1997 Wrx at 280PS at 6.500rpm , but many sources quietly whispered that the figure was actually more like 300PS. The main improvement for the version III STi engine was that it now boasted more torque (and certainly more than the WRX's), at 235lb ft(319Nm) at 4,000 rpm, with a 7,900 red line and an 8.400rpm rev limiter. The version III boasted a compertition clutch to cope with the extra torque.
Cant be arsed to type/quote more, go buy the book, it makes for a good read.

Sti vII 309Nm
Sti vIII 343Nm
Sti V Iv/v/vI 352Nm
Seems the quote above was wrong, but then I have read all this rather than independently testing all the cars like Tony, as he says Dont believe everything you read so he must have this information from his own results.

no it was very recent. it was in reference to olly clark's time attack monster.
A 800bhp+ beast bassed on a classic sti engine.
I would think what you are saying is right the new ones would be better but like i said just what i read
