Default Turbo recommendations please!!

Hi all,
I am on the verge of buying a turbo @ the mo but don't no which 1 to go for
there seems so many differant choices. I have a 02 bugeye 2.0L sti an excedy racing
clutch full decat panel air filter and am having unevan tubular manifolds and simtek
Remap done soon the turbo will be fitted soon after.
I am trying to achieve about 500Bhp and really need to impove my 0-100 time
So would really appreciate some advice on this. The turbos I am thinking of are the
VF38 or the VF34
Thanks for any help in advance!!!

You wont get anywhere near 500 with either if those turbos mate. Need something a wee bit bigger, and plenty of supporting mods.

Those turbos will get you around 350 bhp.

Why 500 bhp ?

You will need to spend in excess of £10k to get anywhere near that in supporting mods.

Not heard of an MD333.

MD321V is the one you need for that power level.

Will need lots of supporting mods aswell, full 3 inch decat, fuel system changes, headers, up-pipe, fmic etc .. ecu will be worth upgrading too.

You must be thinking of the MD555.
The best turbo for a 2litre STI is the MD321H, with FMIC will get around 400bhp and will be very useable on the road. Remember if your main power is in the 5000-7000rpm range you will spend most of your time enjoying it outside any speedlimits in this country.
A chap on here put an S206 on a version 8 sti and got around 460bhp but it's unclear what else he did because initially he got 417bhp.
Speak to Engine Tuner on the fine detail.

Why map it, then fit a turbo ?

Then have to pay to map it again !

I think you need to do a bit of research before doing any modifications

since the bugeye is single scroll system why not try using the HKS GT2835 ? i previously had one fitted on my v3 before the bottom end bearing gone and the turbo is an excellent choice as it almost had no lag

ok would of had remap done after all the work had been carried out just been looking for the right bargains at the right time when all the bits were collected in would of taken car to Api and let them get on with it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BUT DISASTER HAS STRUCK
Took scoob for ride today just pulled on to M1 junction 15a then by juntion 20 Leicester there was smock bellowing out the back all over the motorway have seen that there was all oil coming out of BOV other than that the car seemed ok the engine light was on and a red key shaped light flashing oil light briefly came on aswell.

The AA have recovered the car to Api but has any one got any ideas AA man thinks it maybe the turbo gone or the manifold or a gaskett!!! maybe he just didnt no and did state "i just dont like working on these it takes me hours to strip em down then we wont have the parts" but they have been brill all day!!

Has any one had the same or any ideas really worried about cost and car!!??!!??!!?!?!?!

so you bolted loads of aftermarket upgrades on and decide to take the car out without a remap

ARE YOU MAD

there was only going to be one end result and i think yo have found it.

plus you are looking to bolt on a 500bhp turbo on the standard internals? best of luck with that

by the sounds of it the best thing you have done is take it to API, david and his team are top guys and will look after you well, listen to what he has to say and you will end up with a 500bhp car that you can use everyday

best of luck

Sorry, insensitive of me.

It does sound terminal I'm afraid, I'm hoping it's' 'only' a turbo failure (smoke out of the dump valve)...

whats with this,i wanna get to 500 bhp thing.everywere i look a lately there is some one saying i want a turbo that will get me to 500 bhp,oh and by the way i have already got a panel filter and back box already fitted.do people think that its just a case of putting an exhaust, filter and bigger turbo on and hay presto your there.i think you should really consider having the engine forged for a start so that it will handle 500,then you can go down the route of bolt ons.not to mention the other bits like better brakes and suspension.i think if your car is at API and you want 500bhp then go draw £15,000 out of your bank account, give him it to get started with then see how much extra he needs when its finished.or set yourself a more reasonable goal like 400+ which can be done quite easily with your car.

Maybe ur right might just spend to much time listening to people that dont no enough or maybe they R the wrong people.
But as with anything i like to aim high and take what comes if i fall short. Any work that would of been done would of been carried out by Api and there advice taken i dont work on cars as im no mechanic but like to have something to aim for.
When ive said that im aiming for 500bhp i didnt mean tomorrow and didnt think it would be a matter of loads of bolt ons. Just a target and something to aim for and enjoy (a hobby) sorry if i have offended any specalists out there

Arf,

It amazing how many 500 hp requests I get these days, it is the popular number - just like 400 was 3 years ago.

It's also amazing how many become requests for 350 hp when the numbers are added up.

I quoted a lad with a standard STi 2 for 400 hp last week. Mostly the advice centred around; buy a later car and give me a chance, as that car will owe 10,000 plus by the time it is running reliably.

Have'nt heard from him since, but I know he asked the 'Clinic too and their advice was similar to mine.....

To be honest though, surely you need a bhp to aim for? I know people don't realise the price, but without asking you don't know....

I'm running 430bhp now, so for me the next logical step is going to be the 500 mark, with the scope to go higher....maybe!

Sure Chris, I understand that. But to try and anticipate ALL of the costs to make a standard STi 2 into a 500 hp car, when all the guy has in the first place is a walbro pump - is a bit of a stretch.

Don't get me wrong, when there is a chance that somebody wants to spend money, any money I give it my full attention [ as you know ]. But to flesh out a whole costing for something that is unlikely to happen, as the donor vehicle is so far off the pace from the outset, is very time consuming.

So I tend to offer a start point list that will almost certainly come to around 10,000 in his case and politely ask if the budget runs that far.

I have a customer who came to me back in October for a 6 speed conversion. After talking his project through he then ordered a whole EJ257 based 500 hp conversion on a standard 2000 MY UK car, Brakes suspension, engine, gearbox and all. Short of fluffy dice there is nothing else I can offer him.

Total bill ? over £26,000 So it does happen from time to time and I am always working hard to get customers in the door, no matter what they want me to do.

David

I agree dicko and never realized the price or the damage that a few "bolt ons" can cause you read stories in Max power Fast car Jap car etc etc coupled with all the adds and a few people on forums and you start believing you can acheive anything with your car. TBH i am i bit of a Clarkson as my mate calls me cus i no sod all about cars but love em and love driving fast (dont we all) but i do always do my research and ask specialists first before en barking on crazy stuff but nothing is 100% safe and it is all part of life and the journey and the learning experiance with your car.

i think a lot of the i want 500bhp comes from magazines and forums where people read what others have achieved and instantly want the same.i'm not saying there is anything wrong with this as 50% of the people out there will do the same.i would say the best goal to look for with the sti7/8 is around the400 mark which will still cost a few grand to do but you can normally get away with it on standered internals and will still be a quick car.but of course then there is still the brakes and suspension to tweek so whatever your budget is always add a little more to the pot cos you will always need it.

Would probably take a lot more than that to offend most people!

The key flaw with that approach you were adopting is that there are fundamental differences between the way you'd approach a 500bhp build - even if assembling it piece by piece over time, and what you'd do if you went in asking for 500, got a reality check, came out with a setup optimised for 350 and tried to move up to your original goal from there.

Anyway, all that's academic at the moment. It unfortunately sounds like you have a dead engine from the symptoms you've described, but if nothing else it's in the right hands and any advice you get from this point forward should be correct and realistic. Hope it doesn't turn out to be as serious as it sounds.
