No need to remove arch

Bolts at top to turbo accessed from top once the downpipe is removed> the bolts at bottom accessed from underneath> once undone loosen o/s engine mounting and jack engine up just a little and remove pipe from underneath

cheers for reply, gutted about removing the downpipe, took me ages last time and getting it all sealed up again.

its leaking from the joint where it attaches to the headers so might just undo there and refit a new gasket, see if that sorts the leak from that area/joint

cheers

Bit of a bodge, but what about exhaust joiting paste to see if that solves it, and then you will know what you really need to do.

i think you still have to jack the engine up even after removing the headers as the space is tight, try first if you cant then jack up.

cheers my94wrx, what are the best positions to jack the engine if this turns out to be the case? The Rig what symtoms are you seeing with the leaking joint, is it hesitating & loss of power/torque? cheers Mark

a block of wood on the sump does it every time for, just be careful the the sump isn't rusted though, i have just brought a engine support beam that goes across the 2 inner wings and allows you to lift safely from above, as you asked the rig, yes you can loose power/torque through a up-pipe leak.

cheers for the advice mate, reason i ask is ive had this on going problem with a hesisitation mid to high boost & on the rollers it was abit down on torque/power compared to standard considering the mods, so hoping its down to a leak somewhere in the headers/up pipe

i dont have any power issues or lack of them, just when giving it WOT i get a strong smell of fumes, the leak is small,i only felt it because the engine was cold but after 5 mins i tried again where the leak was and ouldnt get to it as it was too hot so was lucky i found it when i did,not sure quite yet if it is a gasket leak or an actual break down of the up pipe itself (holed etc, still has the heat shield around it) over the yrs as it is the original one

It's probably a good thing to change all gaskets anyway how old our cars are, I've still got the orginal up pipe fitted aswell & the skin/heat shield has a hole in it but like you say it's hard to tell if it's blowing, I'll inspect it once off, good find danog
