2005 Blobeye STi vs 2006 Hawkeye STi
Hi Guys
Ive not long sold my Honda S2000 in need to something with a bit more space. Ive always had a softspot for an Impreza ever since my old man used allow me drive his 1998 Classic Turbo.
Right to the point now anyway.
Ive done loads and loads of searching on various sites and still cannot find what I want to know.
Basically Im looking to buy either a 2005 Sti Blobeye or 2006 Hawkeye Sti.
From what I can gather the Hawkeye had the following changes:-
2.5L engine with lower torque/power band
Carbon Syncro's on 4,5 and 6 gears
Revised DCCD (yaw sensor and torque spilt slightly different)
I think minor suspension changes
Obviously cosmetic changes
Revised centre console and seats
So am I missing anything out??
Ive read that some people prefer the changes to the lazier engine for everyday drivability etc and some dont.
Overall tho whats the general concenseus?
Is the 2.5L better for possible future mods? I always thought cc cound
My budget is right betwee the two lol
Seems you can get a decent blobeye for 10.5K - 11k
But I might be able to stretch to 12k ish for the hawkeye.
Sorry for the essay and no doubt this has been done to death but in a bit of a delema on which to go for.
Thanks
Alex

As you have been used to a revvy Honda, the 2.0L car which likes to rev may be right up your street.
I have had both but prefer my 2.5L more torque and power band a little lower in the rev range
You wont be disapointed with either car

Hey there, I was in the same boat as you, not sure weather to stretch to the extra couple of grand for the hawkeye. I tested both, in my opinion the blobeye looks far better, and is more fun to drive. Dont get me wrong the hawkeye is great but you are going to have so much fun in either that you might as well keep the money you ve saved for something else! There are some proper bargains out there, i paid 9000 for a 2004 with 22 000 on the clock and it had some v expensive mods tein super street suspension the big prodrive wheels dump valve and after burner exhaust. I love it, and i couldnt imagine loving a hawkeye any better! That said if they were both the same price i would have gone for the hawkeye. Sorry to go on... and on

Ok thanks for all the replies.
So apart form the engine would you say the suspension, diff changes, etc make it a better car?
Also concerning engine changes are both engines basically the same apart form the turbo and cc size?
Meaning bothe arnt forged like the JDM's are?

I've got the STI8 PPP - Love it. Later on I test drove the STI9 PPP. I wish I'd bought the 2.5 in the first place. Instead I'm pratting about with porting, pulleys and remapping my ECU, trying to dial out the turbo lag, which the STI9 I drove just didn't have in the first place. Only gripe - the 2.5 was gutless after 5500rpm whereas my tweaked 2.0 pulls hard to the limiter. I'm guessing the same could be done to the 2.5.
Short version - I'm fighting the urge to trade in for the 2.5 I should've bought in the first place...

Hmm I see.
I was going to ask which is the better to get to the 400hp and maybe 400lbft mark.
Has the 2.0l engine got the stronger internals for it or does the extra cc of the 2.5l make it easier. Obviously the cc will help in the torque department.
I think Ive read somewhere that the new 2.5l turbo runs out of stream before that but not sure on the 2.0l

The thing is mate if you can afford the 2.5 then get one their so much easier to drive , i have had both the 2,0 and the 2.5, the other thing is their are a lot of people out there that will say they prefer the 2.0 as they cant afford the 2.5, not all but they are out there, plus the hawkeye looks the DOGS .

Kempy you need to go out and test drive both and make your own mind up
Iv had both ( 2.0l / 2.5l ) and IMO the 2.5l win's hands down,
Iv had my06 now for 2 and half years and love it, nicely modded to 350/400 with more there now the AVCR is fitted
Will be gutted to see it go but Iv got plans for something different for next year

just a bit of info on my car, and how I drive it. it is running at 329/379. max bhp is at 5800 rpm, max torque is at 4400 rpm. now with this in mind i have my REV IND LIGHT set at 5200 rpm, which is bang in the middle of the max tq/ max bhp. some say that it is set too low, i disagree. tbh there is not much point (on roads ) in going much past the 5500 ish mark as i dont think you are doing yourself/the car any favours. in contrast though if i were to be on a track then i would set it bang on the 5800 mark so when i did change up i would be straight on the max tq band therefore max pull/acc. this though is the way i drive and tbh i dont thrash the life out of it because with the 2.5 LAZY you really imo dont need to, to get the most from it. 6th gear 3500 rpm = 100 mph, no problem ( cruisin).

ps. for 400/400 it is achievable aparrently on the standard 2.5 internals. but AFAIK to go any higher SAFELY you need to start strengthening all the internals so i have been told.

Having had a Blobeye 2.0l STI and now currently a 2.5l STI Hawkeye in simple terms to sum up i'd say.
Blobeye has more lag, pulls harder higher up rev range 5,500rpm onwards
Hawkeye has hardly any lag noticable but yes does start to run out of steam around the 5,500rpm mark but the boost pulls very hard much lower down the revs and the car seems feels alot quicker than the Blobeye
Overall opinion, for me i'd take the Hawkeye and not saying that as it's what i've got now just my preference

The couple of things im most concerned about is the lower RPM. I quite like a revvy engine.
When you tune a 2.5 does the power band rise at all?
Also that bloody TAX is a concern lol
Also on a side note. If tends to be better for fuel economy?
Can you drive the 2.0 off boost easier and hence save a bit of fuel
I will be using it as a DD too see.
Cheers

Kempy i feel your pain... I am about to swap my V8 04 plate, which i have owned for 2 and a half years, in for a V9 (pick it up on monday wooo!!) I havn't even test driven it. I have driven a 2005 of about 6 weeks, that was great to drive, it apeared to be more refined with better suspenson, handling and steering than my 04 which feels like a rally car to be honest, bumpy, torque steer etc.. in the back of my mind all i could think of was i should have brought the 2005 model with the dccd! Don't get me wrong i love my 2004, but i want somthing i can tweek and tamper with and even keep in the garage when i have paid it off as my play thing. For me it has to be the last of the real imprezas the v9 saloon. To that end can anyone recomend a loud back box thinking of the afterburner vortex?
