the additional time it would take you to do it in the car IF it could actually be done in the car would pay to borrow/hire a engine crane, as for any guides i dont think you find one

Never tried it myself, but i know a few of the guys on previous threads have mentioned they removed heads whilst they were in car.
Definitely not the way i would do it, but then again i have an engine crane, so it does help. You will honestly struggle to remove heads as i would think that the head bolts will clash with chasis upon removal.
I would suggest that you try taking of the exhaust manifold for a little taster of how ****ty the job is. You will understand what i mean by this. As i usually get wound up and put a grinder to the exhaust manifold lol.
Good Luck

Taking exhaust or intake manifolds off is a totally different scale of job to doing heads-off work. While it can probably just about be done, taking the heads off and working on the engine internals while in the car would be a sh*t job, primarily by virtue of the needy to lean over and not be able to see what you're doing properly. Then there's Baly's point about the head bolts, the exhaust valve lifters constantly wanting to fall out, etc. etc. etc.
You can rent an engine crane from your local HSS or whoever, and once you have it out and on a stand, you'll be able to turn it sideways and get it through your door - assuming you have a spare room or similar to work on it indoors. If you can't do that, then IMHO you'd have to accept that trying to do whatever it is you need to do with the engine in situ is a recipe for further disaster.

and you really need to know what your doing its not as simple as saying i'll do the head gasket, best thing i think you could do is park it up till you have the few bob to get it done by an expert who knows exactly what they are doing, imo.
all the best with whatever route you decide to take it can be very disheartning when something like this happens.

Not the only way. You can rent both - although stands are so cheap there's little point in not buying.
