Default starting rough with petrol smell !

Hi guys , Can anyone shed some light on this issue ? I have a 98 uk turbo and when started from cold it idles very rough and almost sounds like it will cut out ..... if i turn it off it gives off quite a bad smell of petrol ...the car idles ok when warm . There seems to be a quite a few posts about this kind of thing with lots of people having different ideas as to what it is ranging from the Maff , fuel pump, to water temp sensor ....any ideas?

I have had a diagnostic on the car but this only picked up a lazy lambda and a blow from the up pipe but I guess this wouldn't cause the problem stated ?

mines doing this, 93 wrx, from a stone cold start sometimes it struggles to hold the 1500rpm cold fast idle and almost stalls with petrol smell. clears after a few seconds. after that all other starts in the day are fine.
i have no fault codes. tried a new coolant temp sensor and new plugs and its a bit better. forgot to gap the plugs so might try that. otherwise car runs spot on.

Maff or 02 would b my guess, engine temp sensor can be checked with a multimeter and hot water
