Default Is this right-reversing lights and speedo on same sensor??

I bought a 1998 wagon 2.0 last week. It had intermittent reverse lights, so I took it back to the garage where I got it. They said it was the sensor/switch that wasn't working. They took it out as broken and said they would order new part. When I drove home, the speeo wasn't working, and check engine light came on. I drove back straight away, and they say it is the same sensor. Is this true, or am I having the wool pulled over my eyes?? I'm not paying for any of this, the place where I got it is. Any ideas?

Thanks. Kinda makes sense then. They were fiddling in the engine bay to check the reverse lights, is this near the gearbox? Sorry if silly question but I like driving nice cars, not very hot on how stuff works or where stuff is!

Would have thought it was a bit tight to get their hands down to the gearbox from there, is yours a turbo or non turbo Deb?

Non turbo. The bit of the engine bay they were mostly in was closest to the drivers side. They did have it on the ramp after that, but had to leave it there for a couple of hours. Have had to leave my nice new car there until part available, and have been given my part ex car back until fixed! Just wanna make sure when I go back that I can ask the right questions.
