How do i carry out oil and filter change?
Hi guys
So, give me hammer, level, chisel etc and i'm fine but im not experienced with spanners!!! hence the question
i dont want to take it to a garage as id like to maintain it myself if poss know its done proper then
I have a MY96 phase 1 classic UK turbo wagon complete with the undertray!
I've bought the oil,genuine subaru oil filter, new spark plugs and a new air filter
Changed the air filter though that was a sod of a job!
how do i change the oil and filter? saw someone mention "priming filter"
How do i change the plugs? my car has individual coil packs
Lastly what tools do i need coz them spark plugs look in a funny place
Any help gratefully recieved

Sorry chum, no disrespect, but if you thought changing the air filter was hard then the rest is probably out of your league at this early stage. You have a lot to lose if you get it wrong, especially the oil change which is generally recognised as being key to the life expectancy of the big ends. Best to find a local specialist really and ask if you can watch this time, or maybe a Scoobynetter is close enough to you to show you how to do it.
Where abouts are you? Any where near Cambridge/Peterborough and I will be more than happy to show you. Am sure you will get local help any where except possibly the outer Hebrides

Yeah chaning the oil on scoobies badly seems to cause failure.
The process i followed was to disconnect the crank/cam sensor. Cant remember which one it was. Its under the alternator. And it will stop the engine firing. Drain the oil, remove the oil filter, put the sump plug back in. And i was told you MUST prefil the oil filter. Fill the oil filter, shake/tap it untill u get all the bubbles out and its actualy full. may take some time.
Then shuv it on and fill it up with oil. Next is another important step. Once all the oil is in etc. Crank the engine over. This way the oil will start to circulate without the straining the big end as normal running. I cranked it over a good few times. Check oil levels. When your confident, plug the crank sensor back in and start the engine.
I was also told to take out the spark plugs to reduce compression on the cylinders and hence strain on the big end when turning over. If ur doing plugs to possibly good idea to do that.
BEFORE you do it get someone else on here to confirm what i did. Only done 1 service on the car myself so far.
Do a search on here as its been asked many times im sure. including by me

Thats kinda what i figured, hence i didn't jump ahead at changing anything else without asking first due to my limited knowledge.
Sadly i'm nowhere near you i'm in sunny old Wolverhampton
If there is anyone nearby who would be willing to show me i'd gladly make it worth their while
On a different note, i've just installed a scooby chip in my ecu,

Well done chap, not totally hopeless then LOL
Scoobyc's info is correct but I was more worried about what if you got into difficulties ie the filter was stuck, also your understanding of torque loadings for the sump plug and spark plugs. A couple of hours one to one with an experienced mechanic/DIYer is worth so much more than a few words on an enthusiasts forum (usefull as they will be) and will help you to look after your pride and joy much more abley.
Am sure someone will appear from Wolverhampton area to give you a hand. Good Luck.

Had my car 4 1/2 years and never changed the oil myself yet.
Spark plugs aren't too bad, it's just a pain in the **** fiddly job since there isnt a lot of space between the rocker cover and chassis.
As already mentioned, if you're not to confident in doing it yourself, get someone local to give you a hand.
