Has it been like this since you bought it, or did it suddenly "go wrong", or has it got gradually worse to the point it's at now?

If it happened suddenly, and especially if you heard it make an odd noise at any point, have a look round the pipework between the turbo compressor outlet and the intercooler inlet. Silicone ones can pop off, while the standard moulded plastic ones can just pop.

As per previous posts, you need to check the pipework around the turbo in the first instance - including possibly taking the intercooler off so you can give the y-pipe a good once-over. If you're not comfortable doing it, your local Subaru dealer or specialist will be able to help.

It's bound to be a big split in the turbo-to-IC pipe... or the pipe come away altogether (probably under the intercooler end, rather annoyingly...).
