Interesting point, earlier this year I was recommended by my local Subaru Dealer 5w30 fully synthetic but have since been told by many enthusuasts and tuning companies that 5w30 is probabily a little to thin and i would be best to use 10w40 oil, which is what i used in the end.

if your engine is stander'd then a 10/40 semi is what i would use.

Hang on a minute before you go rushing to the stock 10w-40 reply. Some do use 5w-30, the later models certainly do.

Your handbook will specify or give me the year model etc and I'll look it up properly for you rather than guessing!

Cheers

Default Have I used the right oil.

Dear Mr Oilman

Not long after reading your article on this site the oil warning light on my 07 WRX flickered under heavy braking. Pulling in half a mile later at the next services showed almost no oil on the dipstick

I know I should check the oil more but hey.....

Anyway, while trying to decipher my handbook I decided to load up with Shell Helix Ultra in 5w-40 flavour, as based upon my reading it had the highest shear strength of the oils on offer.

So bottom line, after chucking the best part of 4 litres in the car last week should I now be getting an oil change, or did I put an appropriate oil in?

I used 5/40 silkolene pro s for my oil change a nd personally I think its a little too thin.

my car is a 1999 std turbo 2000 a mate swears by castrol 10/60 and his engine is quieter than mine. there is 10,000 miles between both our engines.

No need to change the oil is fine, get your moneys worth from it!

Just like everything though there is better if you want it, give me a shout at next service time and I will give you some options.

Cheers

What makes you think its too thin?

A 10w-60 oil will be quieter as it is thicker and dampens the noise, doesnt mean the noise still isnt being made And you can rest in the knowledge your oil is circulating a whole load better then SAE60 (think high blood pressure).

If you want to go thicker then try a 10w-50 but we would advise against the use of SAE60, its just too thick when hot.

Cheers

But there is no need to run a 10w-60, the engine would prefer a 10w-50

It's ok, but as it's a semi, it won't last as long. It's not the end of the world though

It's not so much the brand as the quality of the oil. Eg Castrol GTX is a basic mineral oil, Castrol edge is a good quality synthetic. Valvoline make some basic oils and some okay ones

Hey oilman.. Some help please.

2004 wrx 342bhp

something that Halfords sell would be ideal as just over the road.

Cheers

For that, I wouldn't suggest anything Halfords sell. We have a free shipping offer until Sunday, use the code FREESHIPJAN, so it should be better price wise than Halfords.

5w-40, 5w-40 oil, 5w40, 5w/40

Out of those, the best ones are the Silkolene Pro S, Millers CFS, Motul 300V, Redline and Gulf Competition. I would stick with one of those as the engine is pretty powerful
